This eBay find is one custom Jeep that will turn heads but be prepared to turn your wallet out for the keys. When it comes to Jeeps there are endless options to improve the already rugged and proven design. The natural off-road habitat of these short wheelbase 4x4s is the hills, rocks, and trails of the American landscape. Jeep owners are a big community, and can be found wheeling a stock JK right along side a quarter-million dollar crawler.
Purpose-built crawling jeeps are a commonplace sight with the ever-expanding aftermarket, and specialty fab shops. Usually these rigs are stripped out, beefed up, and purely reduced to their mechanical needs to get over an obstacle.
Rarely found are crawling jeeps that combine the aesthetics and comforts of a modern vehicle with the all out suspension, driveline, and powerplant of a purebred crawler.
That’s where this 2008 JK comes in. Built by Bruiser Conversions this crew-length truck bed conversion Jeep has all the toys and utilities to get down the trail in style, comfort and competence.
Starting with the swapped powertrain, this JK features a 3.9-liter Cummins ISB four-cylinder turbo diesel engine. If the styling alone did not set this rig apart, the diesel powerplant brings a trail attitude to differentiate it from the sea of four and six-cylinder gasoline Jeeps crawling the hills. A turbo diesel powerplant is a natural decision for a rig like this, compact, torquey, dependable, and long-lived.
Transferring the power from the 3.9-liter Cummins to the wheels is an automatic Allison 1000 and Atlas transfer case. Gears are manually selected via a gate shifter. The front axle is a Dana 60 with an OX Air-locker for when the going gets tough, and the rear end is a Sterling 10.5-inch Race unit also equipped with an OX Air-locker.
Custom made four link suspension keeps the axles in place as they articulate over the rocks using Bilstein shock absorbers to dampen the travel. PSC hydraulic steering takes the elbow grease out of turning the wheel over chunky rocks and other obstacles. 44-inch Pit Bull Rocker tires are mounted on 20-inch Raceline Liberator beadlocks, so airing-down for the trail will yield secure beads, and massive traction.
The body and chassis work on this JK was extensive. The frame was lengthened to accommodate the bed, GenRight fender flares and front bumper lend an aggressive appearance to the Jeep. The interior and exterior accessories of this olive-drab crawler have been bed-linered for that true trail-tested durability.
If you find yourself a little hung-up fear not, a Warn 8-S winch is affixed to the front of this 2008 custom. Maybe your crawling expedition kept you out after dark, Rigid Industries lights will illuminate the trail back to camp after the sun goes down.
The interior of this “Brawler” is no utilitarian sheet-metal tub. Katzskin leather seat covers and Jeep rubber floor matts compliment the array of technology occupants have at their disposal. A Bluetoothed iPad stereo system, Road Rage digital gauges, and sPOD accessories system. Custom door tubes, and hard top keep the passengers securely in place.
The asking price of $160,200 is stunning and may be a little optimistic in today’s market, but we would certainly like to see it go to a diesel, off-road enthusiast who will appreciate this combo of torque and flex.
