Overlanders and professional tradespeople beat their truck bed accessories into the ground every single day. Plastic storage cases can warp under the hot sun or crack from heavy impacts on rough dirt roads. Leitner Designs recognized these physical limits and built the new GearPOD HD out of thick aluminum to survive brutal conditions. This side-mounted box keeps expensive equipment completely safe without taking up valuable floor space inside the truck bed.

Engineers constructed the third-generation storage unit using CNC-welded 11-gauge 5052 H32 aluminum plate featuring a textured diamond-plate exterior. Switching from rotomolded plastic to metal eliminated the need for thick internal support ribs. This material change created 20 percent more usable interior volume compared to the previous generation, giving drivers 48 gallons of cargo room. Surprisingly, the box still maintains the exact same 50-pound weight and external dimensions as the older model.
Leitner Designs Founder and Chief Designer Bernhard Leitner noted: “GearPOD changed how people think about truck bed storage. But some of our customers wanted something even tougher.”

The side-mounted design attaches directly to the Leitner Active Cargo System racks using four simple TrakLOK nuts and heavy-grade bolts. A hidden internal two-point locking bar and a stainless reinforced steel latch protect expensive tools from thieves. Owners can also add padlocks to the integrated holes for extra security. When users need their gear, dual gas struts push the GearPOD HD door open smoothly. An automotive-grade silicone seal fights off rain and dust on the trail.
Bernhard Leitner also added: “GearPOD HD is our answer. It’s built from thick aluminum, maximizes every inch of interior volume, and still weighs the same as the standard GearPOD XL. It’s the most capable storage box we’ve ever made.”

Spending $1,000 on a metal truck box requires serious consideration for most weekend warriors and off-road builders. However, gaining an impenetrable storage vault that mounts safely out of the dirt easily justifies the high price tag. Anyone tired of replacing broken plastic cases should bolt the GearPOD HD onto their rig and hit the trails with complete confidence.
