2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A Takes The Rubicon Back To 1945

Jeep’s yearlong Twelve 4 Twelve celebration is nearly complete, and for its 11th installment the brand is reaching all the way back to the vehicle that helped transform the Jeep from a tool of war into an American civilian icon.

The new 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A pays tribute to the Willys CJ-2A, the first Jeep vehicle developed specifically for civilian use. Rather than simply dusting off another historic nameplate, Jeep has taken the modern Wrangler Rubicon and layered in colors, materials, and design details inspired by the machine that officially kicked off the Civilian Jeep era more than 80 years ago.

It also represents the penultimate chapter in a Twelve 4 Twelve program that has produced everything from the HEMI-powered Wrangler Moab 392 and Willys 392 to the retro-themed Rewind, military-inspired Sarge, and most recently, the Wrangler Smoky Mountain.

For number 11, however, Jeep is going back to the beginning of civilian Jeep ownership.

“The original CJ-2A represents a defining chapter in Jeep brand history. It is the moment the Jeep vehicle found a new purpose in communities across America,” said Branden Coté, Jeep brand CEO. “More than eight decades later, the 2027 Wrangler JL-2A brings that story full circle, carrying forward an iconic silhouette shaped by 85 years of continuous 4×4 leadership while honoring the original through unmistakable design details and delivering the freedom, adventure and legendary capability that will take a new generation wherever the trail leads.”

From The Battlefield To The Back Forty

To understand the JL-2A, you have to go back to July 1945.

The military Willys MB had already proven the basic Jeep formula during World War II, but Willys-Overland saw considerably more potential for the small four-wheel-drive machine once the fighting ended. The result was the Willys CJ-2A, the first Jeep specifically intended for civilian use and the beginning of what would become the long-running “CJ,” or Civilian Jeep, family.

Built in Toledo, Ohio, the CJ-2A adapted the military Jeep concept for farms, ranches, industry, and everyday civilian work. Practical changes included a tailgate and rear power takeoff, while larger headlights and the seven-slot grille helped distinguish it visually from its military predecessor.

And while modern Jeeps are offered in a seemingly endless collection of colors and appearance packages, Willys-Overland wasn’t afraid of color combinations in 1945, either. CJ-2As could be found wearing combinations such as Harvest Tan with Sunset Red wheels and Pasture Green with Autumn Yellow wheels.

Those combinations provided much of the inspiration for the new JL-2A.

Rubicon Hardware, 1945 Attitude

Jeep could have turned the JL-2A into little more than a retro appearance package. Instead, the company chose the Wrangler Rubicon as its foundation, meaning the tribute to the original civilian Jeep comes backed by serious modern trail capability.

Visually, however, this one is all about 1945.

Gobi returns to the Wrangler color palette for 2027 and serves as the most obvious link between old and new, with its earth-toned finish intended as a modern interpretation of the CJ-2A’s Harvest Tan. Jeep shows Gobi on the two-door JL-2A, while the four-door is highlighted in the military-inspired ’41 finish. Bright White, Sting Gray, Ghost, and Joose will also be available.

The wheels might be an even better throwback.

Jeep developed an exclusive 17-inch retro wheel for the JL-2A and painted it Joose, providing a modern nod to the Sunset Red wheels found on period CJ-2As. They’re wrapped in standard 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 All-Terrain tires, giving the retro-looking wheel-and-tire package legitimate trail credentials rather than making it purely decorative.

Orange tow hooks front and rear continue the warm-color theme, while body-color fender flares and a three-piece body-color hardtop give the JL-2A a cleaner, more cohesive appearance. Dark Metallic Grey accents within the seven-slot grille finish the exterior treatment.

It’s an interesting mix. The JL-2A doesn’t attempt to disguise a modern Wrangler as a 1945 CJ. Instead, Jeep has taken some of the original CJ-2A’s most recognizable visual ideas and translated them into the proportions and hardware of a current Rubicon.

Jeep Takes The Heritage Theme Inside

Where things get especially interesting is inside. The Wrangler JL-2A introduces what Jeep calls a Wrangler-first color and material combination using Nappa Heritage Tan and Bison Brown. Nappa Heritage Tan leather covers the seats, while Nappa PUR material is used on the instrument-panel mid-bolster. Bison Brown covers the door panels, lower instrument panel, and center console.

Desert Orange stitching runs throughout the interior and visually ties the cabin back to the Joose-painted wheels outside.

An exclusive Willys-Overland satin-chrome shifter medallion provides one of the more obvious historical references, while heritage-inspired HVAC vent graphics feature the familiar seven-slot grille on one side and a Willys silhouette on the other.

One of the coolest details may be hiding all the way at the back. Jeep fitted the rear swing gate with a special plaque recreating artwork from the original CJ-2A dashboard data plate. Farm and factory scenes reference the CJ-2A’s original role as a machine intended to work in agricultural and industrial environments.

The original civilian Jeep wasn’t conceived merely as a recreational four-wheeler. It was marketed as a multipurpose working machine capable of replacing or supplementing farm and industrial equipment. The JL-2A plaque provides a subtle reminder of just how different the mission of the original Jeep was from the recreational trail machine the Wrangler has largely become.

Heritage Without Giving Up Modern Conveniences

Fortunately, celebrating a Jeep from 1945 doesn’t mean living with 1945 levels of comfort.

The JL-2A receives the Convenience Group as standard equipment, bringing remote start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a universal garage door opener. A front TrailCam with an integrated washer is also standard.

That combination neatly summarizes what Jeep has been doing throughout the Twelve 4 Twelve program: borrowing recognizable elements from its past without forcing buyers to surrender the equipment and capability expected from a modern Wrangler.

We’ve already seen the strategy take several different forms. The Whitecap resurrected the contrasting white-roof look associated with vintage CJs, while the 85th Anniversary Edition leaned into Americana with plaid interior treatments. The Laredo brought another familiar Jeep nameplate back into circulation, while the America250 took the celebration in an overtly patriotic direction.

The JL-2A arguably has one of the clearest historical connections of the bunch. Without the CJ-2A proving there was life for the Jeep beyond the battlefield, the civilian lineage that ultimately produced today’s Wrangler might have looked very different.

The 2027 Wrangler JL-2A will be available to order beginning in October. Jeep has priced the JL-2A package at $4,995, which the company says puts the special edition just $115 above the price of a similarly equipped Wrangler Rubicon.

That relatively small difference makes the JL-2A more than an expensive collection of heritage badges and retro-colored wheels for buyers already shopping for a comparable Rubicon. There is a substantial amount of unique equipment here, particularly inside, where the Heritage Tan and Bison Brown treatment should make the JL-2A instantly distinguishable from a standard Wrangler.

More importantly, the JL-2A gives Jeep’s Twelve 4 Twelve program an appropriate connection to one of the most important vehicles in the company’s history.

The series began by celebrating Jeep’s 85th anniversary with the V8-powered Wrangler Moab 392 and has since wandered through different eras, personalities, places, and milestones in Jeep history. Now, with 11 releases accounted for, the program has nearly reached the end.
