Project Murderado is our 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 4×4. Over the past several months, we have been hard at work to make this half-ton become a machine meant for more than just commuting and carrying groceries.

After a successful installation of a Skyjacker six-inch lift kit complete with shocks, spindles, blocks, we gave the Chevy a set of Dick Cepek 17-inch matrix wheels and 35-inch Extreme Country tires. The truck is looking more and more like it ought to, and now it’s time to help out the sound and power departments with help from Flowmaster.

Dale Dotson was able to speak with us about the company and the kit we had received – an Outlaw cat-back exhaust system (PN 817688). “Flowmaster has many choices for the truck/towing market, ranging from universal muffler replacements, direct-fit muffler replacements, complete headers, dual exhaust systems, and cat-back exhaust systems for most popular late-model trucks and brands,” he said.

Part of the appeal of Flowmaster is the range of options available for customers, from the bold and brash Outlaw line (like we received) to the mild yet noticeable Force II line; there are four lines in all, including American Thunder and dBX.

Dotson elaborated on these lines: “The Outlaw exhaust is very aggressive inside the cab and outside. Next is American Thunder, which have an interior growl at different RPMs with a deep aggressive tone outside. The dBX systems are a little quieter inside and outside, followed by the Force II systems that have very minimal interior resonance and a slight increase over stock sound outside the vehicle with a deeper Flowmaster tone.”

One of the things that makes Flowmaster stand out is the amount of research and development put into every catalog offering. As Dotson explained, “Part of our process is making sure to custom bend tubing for clearance around the factory spare tire, factory installed hitches, fuel lines, suspension, and so on, all without hanging down too low on the vehicle.”

Dotson told us, “The Outlaw is our most aggressive sounding exhaust system both inside and outside the vehicle. Keep in mind that if you’re towing with your truck, the extra load of a trailer, a boat, et cetera will increase the volume both inside and outside a bunch over normal driving conditions.”

What this means for us off-roaders is better sound and performance with a cat-back system, without worrying about too much reduced ground clearance. Testing is done on Flowmaster’s SuperFlow chassis dyno, and once it’s good there, it heads out into the real world on test vehicles.

We can’t wait to see what kind of results we’ll get from installing the Outlaw kit onto Project Murderado.
