Toyota Tacoma Tacozilla Retro Camper Vehicle Unveiled

Toyota Tacoma is one of the best-selling trucks in the midsize segment. The Japanese automaker is now trying to capitalize on America’s love for RVs and its lauded pickup truck nameplate. The company recently unveiled a little something called Toyota Tacoma Tacozilla, which is a very special adventure camper.

Tacoma is one of the most popular pickup platforms in the market right now. We’ve seen many exciting reproductions of the pickup truck, and customers have a soft spot for camping machines. Toyota’s marketing team took the opportunity and thought of something along the same lines.

The Toyota Tacoma Tacozilla was recently featured in a YouTube video. The company essentially designed a retro-style living compartment for a TRD Sport Tacoma. Toyota’s motorsports tech center in Texas is building the Tacoma adventure camper. The bodywork of the living compartment will be made out of aluminum and in just two weeks, the team has already fabricated the camper cage.

Specifications of the Toyota Tacoma Tacozilla TRD Sport:

  • 278 HP/ 265 lb-ft 3.5-liter V6 Motor with 4WD
  • 6-speed Manual Gearbox
  • DOHC 24-valve direct-injection Atkinson-cycle engine
  • VVT-i D4S self-cleaning injectors
  • 4WDemand part-time 4WD

Toyota Tacoma Tacozilla project model is inspired by the Toyota Chinook camper vehicle, which was first introduced in the late ‘70s. As the name suggests, the camper was the result of Toyota’s partnership with RV manufacturer- Chinook. The Japanese automaker has already come up with some stylish renders for the camper reboot.

The team manager- Marty Schwerter- describes the living compartment as a “micro house,” which embodies the 70s vibe. Two six feet tall adults can comfortably stand inside the living compartment. The micro house includes a table, a kitchenette, a toilet, and a bed that sits atop the cab. Toyota Tacoma Tacozilla will be showcased at the upcoming 2021 SEMA Show.

As per the digital renders, the camper’s bodywork will sport brown and orange styling accents, which further highlight Tacozilla’s retro vibe. The team has confirmed that the upcoming Toyota Tacoma Tacozilla camper might also get some serious off-road tech if they get clearance from Marty Schwerter. For this reason, the team has substantially reduced Tacozilla’s approach angle.
