Rick Doetsch has seen and experienced more off-road insanity than most people can ever imagine. The story of his team’s 2017 Can-Am X3 two-seater is a shining example of what it looks like to own, build, and drive a race-prepped UTV, and thanks to companies like Hyperco being on board, things are just starting to heat up.
Shown at the Sand Sports Super Show, Off Road Expo, and other venues, the Doetsch team is especially excited for 2019. This year marks the first time they will be competing within the new UTV Pro Stock class at the Baja 500, 400, and 1000. Added this year to the SCORE class schedule, this grueling foray into some of nature’s most inhospitable terrain will surely provide ample room to test the mettle of the drivers, as well as the fortitude of their Hyperco Coil suspension.
When Doetsch Racing first entered their relationship with Hyperco, they were looking for coils for the 2.5- and 3.0-coilover shocks they build for the truck and SUV market. It wasn’t until the team began prepping for the 2018 Vegas to Reno Race that they realized that the Can-Am X3’s stock setup wasn’t going to cut the mustard. So, after much discussion, the team took several spring rates and began testing them out down at Plaster City.
At the time, Hyperco was already developing coils for other portions of the UTV market, so building upon the groundwork already set in place only expedited the development of Doetsch Racing’s exclusive coils. In the blink of an eye, the team began noticing massive improvements in the way in which their Can-Am two-seater behaved.
“Handling improved dramatically compared to stock after the third re-valve session on our shocks,” says Kandee Doetsch. “The extreme testing and proven performance during the Vegas to Reno Race helped in the development of these Hyperco spring packages for this platform.”
As of late, the Doetsch Racing team has been getting ready for the Baja 500 and 400, and are excited about bringing on fresh sponsors like Baja Designs, Energy Suspension, and others. As for the suspension setup seen here, enthusiasts can now purchase Doetsch Racing’s exclusive eight-piece Hyperco Coil spring package and pair them with the brand’s custom in-house tuning of FOX, King, and Walker Evans shocks.
