Our jaws dropped to the floor after we took a look under the hood of this 1993 GMC Jimmy, brought to our attention by SLTV reader Nolan Kuesel. While it may look like your typical black Jimmy from the exterior it’s a different beast on the inside. Sitting in the engine bay is a built twin turbo 5.3l LS1 built to run on E85. John of Green Bay, Wisconsin built this Jimmy to be a stealth performer.
The build was an off frame restoration which included removing the body and disassembling the entire frame. After the frame was disassembled it was sand blasted and given a coat of industrial paint. It was then resembled with new urethane bushings, new ball joints and steering components. New disk brakes where added on all four corners and a hydro boost braking & power steering system was installed.
The 5.3L has been rebuilt for maximum off road performance. It has been given upgraded head studs, 706 head castings and a camshaft from an LS9. 80 pound Seimens injectors where added and are supplied by two Walbro 255l inline fuel pumps which run parallel for E85 fuel support.
As we mentioned earlier this ferocious small block is equipped with twin turbos. The twin turbo system was built using two Holset H1C turbos and headers constructed from a mild steel header kit. The turbos push the exhaust into a 3 inch down pipe which merges into a 4 inch exhaust. The turbos allow this savage LS motor to produce 555 horses and 500lb of torque with 13 psi- all at the wheels.
The 5.3 is mated to a TH350 transmission which has been given an alto red clutch, a kolene steels, a shifter kit and a new tsi convertor. The th350 connects to a GM 8.5 inch rear with 3.08 gears and front GM 3.08 stripped from a 1993 AWD Astro Safari. The transfer case is an AWD drive case ripped from an Olds Bravada.
As you can tell from the pictures this Jimmy is a clean truck. However it’s not a show truck or garage queen. John built this car to be a stealth off road or street performer.
