The 2015 Mercedes-Benz Unimog U 5023 4×4 may be the largest yet. The first of these all terrain beasts rolled off the assembly line and will hit the market by the end of the year. Unlike most of today’s SUVs that are nothing more than a glorified FWD station wagon, the Unimog was designed for hard work and off roading. Mercedes-Benz encourages and insists that you take the Unimog off road and push it too its limits.
It’s designed to tackle the roughest of terrain including mountains, deserts and lakes of mud. Mercedes-Benz has designed the truck with the intent of being used by fire departments, pipeline construction and perhaps even military. Its designed to rescue people trapped in the harshest of environments.
It’s powered by a high-torque Euro VI four-cylinder engine that gives the massive beast a top speed of 90 KMH on open road and makes it capable of hauling a massive load of 14.5 tons. Other features of the Unimog are part-time all-wheel drive, differential locks, ABS and EQR (electronic quick reverse). This will allow safer driving in rough terrain.
Yaris Pursun, Head of Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, said at the launch ceremony, “The new extreme all-terrain Unimogs set a new benchmark in the off-road sector. They impress with their ability to handle every terrain and master every challenge, be it in forest fire-fighting, flood areas or open-cast mining. The Unimog is an all-rounder, and we’ve been able to further improve its qualities despite the major challenges posed by Euro VI. That’s a really fantastic achievement.”
A fantastic achievement it is, and expect to see this metallic beast operating in plenty of service fleets and fire departments around the world. Wouldn’t you like to park one in your driveway?
