Diesel enthusiasts are some of the most hard-charging motorists out there. From towing to racing to everyday driving, their vehicles get put through a lot. Here at the 2016 SEMA Show, they’re being taken care of by aFe Power in a big way thanks to new cooling and fueling solutions.
Director of Engineering Ken Zeller walked us through the new intercooler for the 2013-16 6.7-liter Cummins, as well as the new Severe Duty radiators for multiple applications. “Our new intercooler is a bolt-in replacement and is 30 percent bigger than the OEM unit,” he said. “It uses a huge six-inch-wide core and offers a significant improvement to flow versus the stock unit. If you’re towing or running a high-performance build, this is a great option.”
The new intercooler for the 2013-16 6.7-liter Cummins is made from 6061-T6 aluminum and features TIG welds for great strength. Its five-inch-wide core offers superior flow compared to the stock intercooler to boot.
Looking over the Severe Duty radiator, Zeller said: “This particular unit is for the 7.3-liter Power Stroke. This is the result of about a year of research and development, and is still in the works, but we wanted to give people something to talk about.”
The big takeaway from the Severe Duty radiator is that it lives up to the name. This is thanks to the bar-and-plate design borrowed from aFe’s intercoolers, making it strong and resilient when compared to stock plastic radiators. “We gave the Severe Duty a lot of density which, like brakes, makes it more efficient at heat transfer and keeping the engine cool,” said Zeller. “It takes a long time to heat up, and it keeps the temperature very consistent that way. It will be useful for long hauls or racing applications.”
The new Severe Duty radiator is designed to live up to its name thanks to its bar-and-plate design, making it stouter and more resilient to the engine's demands. What it adds in weight it more than makes up for in durability and longevity for racing or towing applications.
