Fuel Safe has been producing fuel cells to take the abuse of all types of racing, one of those being off-road. Its off-road cells are specifically designed to take on the rigors of the harsh off-road environments these cells will be exposed to.
The company offers a wide range of fuel cells for anything from truck, buggy, and even now UTV racing cells while being compatible with race fuels, diesel fuels, and ethanol blends. We had a chance to check out the cells up close and see what makes them work so well.
Mike Torvik said, “Our off-road fuel cells are some of the largest fuel cells that we make. … and are available in 40, 50, 60, or 70 gallon sizes, with many of the Trophy Trucks and desert vehicles running the 40 gallon.”
“The off-road industry has struggled with the baffling foam. Many drivers have gone away from using it because their fuel system will get clogged. Our foam is one that has not been giving them that issue,” Torvik stated.
“One thing a lot of off-road guys have been doing is running an external fuel pump, so if it fails it can be easily replaced. That is not always the best way to run your pump. We have been working with Aeromotive testing drop in cells,” Torvik explained on the difference of a drop-in and external pump.
Torvik also explained the downfall of having an external pump, “Extrenal pumps start to pull fuel on start-up and then creates a syphon. If this does not occur the fuel pump is constantly pulling fuel, thus creating the possibility of pulling air through the pump and damaging it.”
When selecting a fuel cell it is more than just about selecting a size, location needs to be considered as well.
