Off-road group trail runs can be great when it is off the cuff with no plans or agenda. We emphasize can be because when off-roading, it is best to be organized and prepared. Things can go wrong fast. When off-roading hundreds of miles away from home with a large group, you better be prepared for the unexpected. You should also have a detailed schedule, contingencies, and seasoned experience working towards one goal.
This means knowing what you are doing, knowing who is doing it with you, and so much more. That is what we found to be the case with Nick Ashby from Rockstar Performance Garage. He and his crew run a tight ship and were well prepared with some of the most capable rock crawlers to go and conquer Moab Easter Jeep Safari.
Rockstar Garage is a well-known builder of SEMA vehicles and high-performance off-roaders. On the 2022 EJS adventures we saw many awesome over-the-top rigs but the ones hanging with Rockstar Garage definitely stand out. This included @Grdloc, @theTrailReaper, @the_bombshell_jku, @usps_lj, @old_markdonald, @cameron.c0le, @chris_at_arwoffroad, @1_bad_lj, @ProjectOverkill_JT. Rockstar Garage also supports the efforts of many industry companies such as Mickey Thompson Tires, Dirty Life Wheels, Lucas Oil, Yukon Gears, and a whole roster of others.
As your Editor of Off Road Xtreme, I had never been to Moab, Utah, and had identified EJS 2022 as a prime opportunity. We had just got our 2021 Rubicon ORXtreme JL to the point where it was trail-ready and started making a plan. We knew Nick had Easter Jeep Safari on his calendar and was likely organizing a good group to hit the legendary off-road trails.
Rockstar Garage Conquers Moab
Ashby was willing to accommodate us and let us come along for the ride. The planned agenda for Rockstar Garage was to conquer as many trails in Moab as possible during this multi-day adventure. This started out with Pritchett Canyon on Day 1. Day 2 pushed the group over to Potato Salad, Wipeout Hills, and Backwards Bill. Day 3 saw an expanded group running Cliffhanger and then Moab Rim for Day 4. For Day 5, the gang ended the week on Gold Spike and Rusty Nail.
Not only does Rockstar Garage build incredible vehicles, but they also plan and organize world-class 4×4 trail runs. Besides handling the mission planning, they secure permits, bring in partners, select invitees, and handle logistics. During the run itself, safety is the number priority, so a detailed safety meeting is held at the trailhead staging area. Nick and his team go over emergency plans, pass out radios, present important trail information, and advise on critical details. While out on the trail, Nick and others are pointing out lines, spotting on tricky obstacles, assisting in recoveries, and keeping the group moving.
Besides all of that, Rockstar Garage is documenting each and every vehicle in the group to produce daily recaps, product spotlights, vehicle features, and awesome photography throughout the entire trip. During Easter Jeep Safari 2022, they produced three video edits and a ton of amazing images. Off Road Xtreme is grateful to have been provided this material to share with you.
Rockstar Garage Conquers Moab: Starting Easter Jeep Safari in Pritchett Canyon
We had an incredible EJS this year full of ups and downs, with a week full of trails, we decided to hit it hard early with Pritchett Canyon taking the first spot on our list. This trail never fails to test every driver and car in the line. We also played on Potato Salad and wipeout hills. It was a great kickoff to the week!
Red Rock 4-Wheelers rates Pritchett Canyon as a Level 9 trail. 37-inch tires, winch capabilities, front and rear lockers are recommended equipment. There are 4.5 miles of hard going obstacles through the canyon and a 14-mile run after to get back around.
Rockstar Garage Conquers Moab: Driving on the Cliffs of Moab, Cliffhanger & Moab Rim
The next two trails on our EJS lineup tests your fear of heights. Cliffhanger and Moab Rim both offer unbeatable views and a handful of great obstacles. Buckle up and don’t look down!
Cliffhanger is rated as a Level 8 by Red Rock 4-Wheelers and is a 20 mile run round trip. It features 12 miles off pavement and offers plenty of variety and ohh $#!% moments. The big pay off are the incredible views and vistas. Minimum size tires are 35-inch and you better have both front and rear lockers.
One of the best trails in all of Utah is the Moab Rim. Known for its iconic climb out of the Colorado River gorge, this trail delivers off-roaders to the top of the La Salle Mountains for an amazing view. It is a Level 7 according to the RR4W Club and they suggest 35-inch tires or bigger. It stretches for 9-miles off-road.
Finishing EJS in the Golden Crack, Our Last Day in Moab
We wanted to cap the week out with a truly iconic Moab trail, Gold Spike and Rusty Nail was an easy choice. Connecting a couple of incredible trails stuffed with great obstacles made for a long but perfect final day out at Easter Jeep Safari.
For the big finale, Rockstar Garage looped in Rusty Nail, another big dog Level 8 trail that test the fortitude of both equipment and machine. This trail provides a shortcut to the Golden Crack area of the Golden Spike Trail. There are 27-miles of off-roading that presents vast panoramic views of the Colorado River and the canyons and mesas that surround it. Jeep Arch can be seen, the top of the Gold Bar Rim provides views into Moab Valley and Arches National Park. What an awesome way to the end the trip.
