Attempting infamous off-road trails pushes drivers and machines to their absolute limits. But tackling one of the most difficult trails in Moab, Pritchett Canyon, in vehicles never intended for such abuse? That makes for a story.
PeckBrothers found themselves in just such an unexpected situation, taking their custom Mini Jeeps – originally brought for easy in-town cruising – onto the legendary, brutal trail for an urgent mission.
The plan in Moab was simple: cruise around town in their Mini Jeeps, perhaps get ice cream. That changed with a call for help involving a stranded “Cybertruck” needing a starter motor up Pritchett. Alex Peck explained their initial reluctance: “They’re not made for the hardest trail in Moab,” and highlighted safety concerns.
Faced with mechanical failure early on, the team saw it as a potential warning sign and considered abandoning the attempt. But after some time, they pressed on and switched drivers. The mini Jeeps began to surprise them with their capability to tackle challenging obstacles.
Bradey Peck noted the difficulty right at the start, saying, “I don’t even know if this is the obstacle; this is just how you get to the trail.” He later recounted his experience on one difficult section, as he stated, “I was on the brakes all they could go the whole time.”
Alex Peck felt better after taking the wheel on one Jeep, saying, “I feel much better about this.” However, new issues arose when Brady’s Mini Jeep developed an oil leak caused by a rubbing oil filter, forcing a difficult decision to stash Bradey’s Jeep and continue with their rescue mission.
Their objective remained to get the starter motor to the “Cybertruck”, which they eventually reached and got running. The challenge then became recovering the two mini Jeeps from the mountain before dark. This involved complex winching and loading maneuvers, including placing the brakeless Mini Jeep onto the back of the “Cybertruck.”
Alex admitted, “I don’t even know what to say, man. I’m so tired.” Brady also reflected on the experience, saying,” The good part about it is we’re making memories … you remember these ones where you’ve got a mini Jeep on top of your Cybertruck.”
Off-road trails like Pritchett Canyon require skill, improvisation, and a capable vehicle. PeckBrothers showed that having the right driving knowledge can push even unexpected rigs through unbelievable situations. Faced with failing brakes, oil leaks, and extreme obstacles far from help, what would you do in their situation?
