Bryce Menzies and fellow team racer Ricky Johnson were a force to be reckoned with at the recent Rounds 9 and 10 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series held at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California. The Motive Gear-sponsored teammates proved to be a dashing duo at the vaunted SoCal stadium, and had their fair share of setbacks to make their podium finishes all the sweeter.
The action was slow going at first, as Pro 4 driver Johnson hit a snag early on in the qualifier. His engine blew an oil line during a practice run, which drained the oil out onto the track. This required an engine swap to be finished in less than three hours, which the pit crew was able to do. Johnson did well enough, taking fourth place.
Later on, Johnson was able to put his experiences in Round 9 to better use as Round 10 rolled around. His bad luck ran dry as the rain coincidentally came pouring on, and he eventually stood on the 3rd place spot at the podium.
Meanwhile, Pro 2 competitor Menzies had a seemingly harmless door-to-door bump with Carl Renezeder. Racing officials ruled the accident as a black flag infraction, and Menzies paid the price by the time the checkered flag waved, taking eighth place in Round 9.
Following a similar fate as his teammate Johnson, however, Menzies was able to turn things around in Round 10. With Renezeder out of action on the first lap, Menzies concentrated on getting past Jeremy McGrath, and did so with dispatch. The 27-year-old Menzies kept the lead all the way to the finish line, and chalked up another righteous 2014 victory.
