When it comes to off-road vehicles, this truck truly adopts the meaning. The eloquently named Gibbs Humdinga is a wild fusion/hybrid truck-boat, that gets rather impressive speed and maneuverability on both land and water, reaching up to 30 mph in the water and regular highway speeds on land. That’s pretty great considering its build and dual functionality.
It’s top-heavy and a bit more bulky than James Bond’s Lotus Esprit (from The Spy Who Loved Me), but it’s got a pretty sweet suspension system by the looks of it. The truck can transition between the two modes with the push of one button and is designed to carry 7 passengers or cargo equivalent.
Ideally, these vehicles are suited for emergency response situations for rescue and recovery, but surely are not limited to it. Owning one of these Amphibious trucks for recreational use would be just about the coolest thing ever. All it’s missing is the ability to fly, which we’re sure somebody out there is already working on.
Amphibious vehicles aren’t an entirely new thing. They have been around for quite a while, starting with the 1940s Porsche Schwimmwagen. It had 25 horsepower and got to 30 mph on land and 5 mph on the water. Luckily, what they have going on now is a bit more upscale.
Gibbs Amphitrucks are based out of the UK, you can check out their site here and they make another larger version of the Humdinga appropriately called the Phibian, powered by 2 diesel engines it can carry up to 4,400 lbs of cargo or 15 passengers.
What Gibbs has been doing with their amphibious vehicles is something i hope to see go mainstream in all vehicles, however that dream is a bit far off, remember in the 80’s when we thought we would have flying cars by today? Yeah I think i’ll probably just keep waiting. Either way, these amphitrucks are on a whole other level of off-road.
