Canidae may make some swell comestibles for dear old Fido, but that’s not all the company dabbles in. The kibble maker based in San Luis Obispo, California, has been in the business of making pet food for the better part of thirty years now, but it’s the company’s interests in off-road racing that keeps it from adopting a stodgy, corporatized image, and lets the fun, competitive side hang out for all to see.
As the main sponsors of racers Scott Whipple and Nick Berlanga in the #95 Trophy Truck, Canidae gets to have its name out there while supporting one of the most awesome and demanding motorsports in existence: desert racing. At the recent Best In The Desert Parker 425 race in Parker, Arizona, Whipple and Berlanga were outfitted with a top-notch film crew to document the trials and tribulations of the event, from the early time trials to the final moments leading up to the checkered flag.
Set to the rollicking and punchy tunes of Muse’s “Revolution,” the video captures the highlights in glorious high-definition as the team battled severe ruts, lengthy jumps, banking bermed turns, and more on their way to the finish line. “Time trials didn’t go that well, since we’d missed the practice lap,” confessed Whipple to the camera during the tech stage. “We had a little bit of a mechanical glitch and the guys worked their butts off so we could make the qualifying lap.”
#95 started in the middle of the group, facing off in a field stuffed with over 180 competitors, over half of whom failed to finish. Cracked headers, a blown tire, and a missing transmission cooler fan cost them time, but the team managed to finish 10th place in their class (41st overall) with a total of 9 hours, 6 minutes, and 53 seconds to their credit. Not bad for an honest day’s work, and certainly a time to beat at the forthcoming Mint 400 set to take place soon in mid-March. We wish these guys the best of luck in the meantime.
