We love things that are different. What really grabs our attention is a truck that has something new or unusual going for it. A trick engine swap, a real-world suspension that looks good too, or a body that has been manipulated to increase the rig’s functionality. When we first came across this 2014 Ram 2500 Cummins Mega Cab Long Bed, it took a few moments for us to realize why it looked a bit strange to us, but then it dawned on our collective consciousness that it was the bed.
If you’re a big Ram fan, you probably know that the Ram 2500 Mega Cab is not available from the factory with a long bed. This is no ordinary Ram. It was built by Precision Body Lines of Salt Lake City, Utah for Perma-Cool. Perma-Cool wanted a truck built that would stand out in the crowd of the 2014 Specialty Equipment Marketing Association (SEMA) Show, held recently in Las Vegas, Nevada, it went to Precision Body Lines.
The bed swap is not the only cool thing going on here, though. The already beefy 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel engine was spurred on with the addition of a K&N air intake system that helped boost the horsepower and torque of the Cummins inline-six. To continue building on the free-breathing plan, the 6.7L was given a stainless steel exhaust system from Gibson Exhaust. To re-tune the engine to help it take best advantage of the K&N intake and the Gibson exhaust upgrades, a Juice With Attitude CTS programmer from Edge Products was used.
Then Perma-Cool added one of its dual oil filter relocations kits specifically developed for this truck to make oil changes much easier and cleaner for someone working on the 6.7L Cummins-powered pickup. The under-frame set-up is protected by a steel shield, and holds twin K&N oil filters. A one-inch nut welded to the ends of the K&N oil filter canisters makes the job a no-brainer when it comes time to change filters on the 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel.
Sitting five-inches higher than stock with the help of a FabTech Motorsports suspension lift kit allows the custom Ram Mega Cab Long Bed to run 37-inch Nitto tires wrapped around 20-inch BMF wheels with no trouble at all. The rivet-style fender flares from Lund add a rugged look and a certain “here I come” attitude to the body. A T-Rex Grilles billet aluminum grille, Iron Cross bumpers front and rear, a Smittybilt XRC winch, and Vision X LED lights finish off the body accessory list nicely.
While we’re not aware of any awards from the show, this well-put-together pickup made a big splash among our staffers. In a sea of Jeeps, this 2014 Ram 2500 Cummins Mega Cab Long Bed stood out like a brightly beaming lighthouse. As we said before, this very unique custom truck got our attention, and the massive diesel pickup called us in to its shoreline like ships lost in the night.
