SEMA Crunch: Off-Road Edition

REWA015

With the SEMA Show right around the corner vehicle builders are not the only ones feeling the time crunch. With qualifying for the Baja 1000 taking place Tuesday November 3rd at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway race teams are having to prep and ready the trucks for the event.

REWA006The SEMA SCORE Baja 1000 Experience will once again happen this year outside the Las Vegas Convention Center’s South Hall alongside Paradise Road. It will include a 70,000-square foot desert racing exhibit, 23 SCORE Trophy Trucks and four unlimited Class 1 race vehicles will be on display, exhibits from leading off-road and desert racing companies, the SCORE transporter, a huge stage, a massive SCORE vision double-sided LED screen showing SCORE race videos, press conferences, autograph sessions and an interactive BFGoodrich Tires display which will include a public pit-crew challenge.

We had the chance to stop by Terrible Herbst Motorsports in Huntington Beach, California to see how the prep work was going, leading up to qualifying. When we arrived at the shop the two Trophy Trucks were completely assembled with little work left to be done. “The trucks will head out to Las Vegas on Monday, and do some testing before going on display at the SEMA Show. The trucks will head to qualifying Tuesday, and then return to the SCORE Experience for the remaining of the week.,” Todd Gorsuch mentioned.

The team did have one thing to get done on the trucks while we where there – setting toe. No fancy alignment machine needed to get these trucks dialed in, just a tape measure, string, and some tape. With both trucks having the identical setup setting the measurement went quick. The adjustment may not be the same on both trucks, but how it is done and where is.

REWA010“Qualifying is tricky, it is done at night and goes all over the Motor Speedway complex. The lap hits the short-course track, pavement, and some. They also water the dirt which can affect the terrain depending on the position that draw for qualifying,” Todd continued. “We did ok in qualifying last year, somewhere around 11th and 15th.”

With everything completed the trucks would sit and wait to be loaded onto the trailer before being driven out to Las Vegas. We will catch back up with the team and the trucks next week and find out how testing went.
