First Look: Scout Motors Unveils All-New Traveler And Terra

The Scout nameplate is making its return after an absence of 40-plus years. The legendary nameplate is synonymous with a sturdy, go-anywhere vehicle and it’s renewed by Scout Motors with two new models, the Traveler SUV and the Terra pickup. Both promise serious off-road capability with a modern twist. They’re electric. Here’s a closer look.

Inspired By The Iconic International Harvester Vehicles

The all-new Scout Motors vehicles take inspiration from the iconic International Harvester Scout designs, but with a modern look. Think bold, angular lines and a tough ready-for-anything stance. The front and rear lighting has a distinctive, almost futuristic look to it, while the interior is designed to be comfortable and well-equipped.

Solid Rear Axle, Mechanical Lockers

Off-road aficionados need ruggedness and functionality, and Scout Motors knows that. That’s why both the Traveler and Terra use body-on-frame construction. Underneath each vehicle is a solid rear axle, while up front, the suspension is independent. Both differentials are fitted with good ‘ol mechanical lockers. The platform can clear up to a 35-inch tire, has around 12 inches of ground clearance, a disconnecting front sway bar, and can ford nearly three feet of water. Additionally, each vehicle can haul almost 2,000 pounds of payload. Need to tow? The Traveler can take over 7,000 pounds, and the Terra can pull over 10,000 pounds.

Up To 500 Miles Of Range

Of course, as these are electric vehicles, range is always a concern, especially for those who venture off the beaten path. Scout Motors has addressed that to a degree by inserting a battery pack into the chassis that has an estimated 350 miles of driving range. But, if you need to go further, an available gas-powered range extender called the “Harvester” adds power back to the battery pack, extending that distance to more than 500 miles.

Performance is also important and the quickest model will take a mere 3.5 seconds from 0 to 60 mph. Torque is nearly 1,000 pound-feet. Scout Motors utilizes the North American Charging Standard as well as an 800-volt architecture to enable fast charging speeds of up to 350 kW.

Starting Price Under $60K, Reservations Available Now

Scout Motors says the starting price for the Traveler and Terra will be under $60,000 MSRP. Production begins in 2027, but reservations are now being accepted with a $100 refundable deposit.

On paper, the new Traveler and Terra check off some boxes when it comes to proven off-road bits. Will it be enough to win over off-road fans that have historically purchased rigs powered by internal combustion engines? Time will tell. And there’s plenty of time to digest the new Scout vehicles since production isn’t slated to begin for a while. We anticipate that Scout Motors will release much more info on the Traveler and Terra over the next few months, so stay tuned to offroadxtreme.com for more information.
