It is no secret how popular and fun the Ford Raptor is. The entire world knows of its prowess. So much so that since the Raptor isn’t as available around the world as other, smaller, vehicles, some companies have gone so far as to make their own.
Most of the time, these dealer built vehicles are nowhere near the ability of a true Raptor. One company in the United Kingdom has changed that. M-Sport is a motorsports company that generally focuses on rally sports. Even chosen by Ford Motor Company “to mastermind its assault on the FIA World Rally Championship,” per the M-Sport Facebook page.
With all the rally experience, M-Sport is no slouch when it comes to knowing what to put into a well-performing vehicle. The team started with a current production European Ford Ranger with 4 wheel drive, 3.2-liter TDCI, and a double cab. The 5-cylinder diesel engine is rated at 185 horsepower at 3,000 rpm. Not a huge power monster but the 350lb.ft.torque at 1,500 – 2,500 rpms makes up for it and moves the 4,000-pound truck right along. M-Sport added a sports exhaust to boost power a bit more.
Multiple add-ons bring the mini-me Raptor up to a fancier style. The front gets a custom bumper, custom fender flares all around, and auxiliary LED lights from Lazer on the roof and grille. Optional full underbody protection kit as well as a tonneau cover are also available in limited edition. The truck features a full leather interior, a sporty steering wheel and tinted rear glass round out the high-quality finish.
The biggest add-on this truck is getting is a 1.75-inch suspension kit from Pedders, also from the U.K. Pedders’ suspension kit comes with full replacement TrakRyder foam cell shocks for front and rear, replacement front coil springs, a pair of heavy duty rear leaf springs and all the necessary u-bolts and bushings for the new components.
The 1.75-inch lift is enough to fit 33-inch tires on 17-inch wheels. The front suspension also gets a skid plate to help for those “whoops” moments. Not the full performance level of a factory Raptor but definitely a performance enhancement that can be flogged at speed on many trails and dirt roads.
M-Sport will be using a dealer network to get the modified trucks to the European public around September 2016. Several news sources are spreading (possible) rumors of the Ranger coming back to the United States for a 2018 model year, in the form of the global unit the M-Sport is based on.
IF this is true, will Ford be paying attention to what M-Sport and others are doing as well as the insane popularity of their own U.S. Raptor sales and nearly cult following? In the factory performance market, there isn’t much for trucks and SUVs, a Ranger Raptor could be just what the mid-size and compact pick-up market needs to get fired up again.
