New Bark: Flowmaster’s American Thunder GM Cat-Back Exhaust System

The 6.2-liter V8 in the new 2024-2025 GM trucks makes great power, but many owners feel the factory exhaust is just too quiet. For those who want to hear that classic V8 rumble, Flowmaster has just released a new American Thunder cat-back exhaust system. It not only uncorks the engine’s sound but also cleverly integrates with the truck’s own technology to keep it quiet when you need it to be.

A Switchable Cat-Back Exhaust System

Here’s the cool part: the new Flowmaster exhaust plugs right into the truck’s factory wiring for the active exhaust valve. You control the sound using the existing drive mode button on the dash. Leave the truck in “Normal” mode, and a valve redirects the exhaust through the muffler for a quieter, neighborhood-friendly tone that cuts down on annoying highway drone. When you’re ready to make some noise, switch the truck to “Sport” or “Off-Road” mode, and the valve opens up, allowing the exhaust to bypass the main muffler path for that deep, classic Flowmaster sound.

The Hardware

The system itself is built from durable 409 stainless steel and is backed by Flowmaster’s Lifetime Limited Warranty, ensuring it will last for years. It starts with a large 3.5-inch inlet pipe that runs into a specially tuned 50 Series HD muffler, designed to deliver that iconic sound while maximizing performance. From there, dual 2.5-inch tailpipes are mandrel-bent, a process that ensures the pipes maintain their full diameter through every curve for smooth, unrestricted airflow. The system finishes with a pair of big 4.5-inch black ceramic tips that fit the factory bumper cutouts perfectly for a clean, professional look.

More Than Just Noise

Flowmaster says this new cat-back exhaust system isn’t just for sound. The company put it on the dyno and recorded gains of up to 15 horsepower and 13 lb-ft of torque measured at the rear wheels—a bump in power drivers can actually feel. The entire kit (part number 818206) is designed as a straightforward, bolt-on system that uses all the stock hanger locations. This makes it a manageable installation for a home garage that should only take a few hours with basic tools.

Modern Truck, Classic Sound It seems

Flowmaster has found the sweet spot for the new GM trucks. This new system gives owners the aggressive V8 sound they want, a real bump in power, and the ability to quiet it all down with a factory button press. It’s a smart setup that adds a classic muscle truck personality without forcing GM truck owners to choose between being too loud or too quiet.
