While the factory lighting on the UTV provides plenty of illumination for slower-speed scenarios, it struggles to provide the output required to hammer down in the dark. It also doesn’t have diddly squat for backup lighting, something that is both inconvenient and potentially dangerous.

For Jeremy’s Maverick, he opted to go with a set of Clearwater Erica lights (P/N:ORE1) out front. With just 60 watts of power consumption when set on high, a 3.73-inch diameter across each light housing, and 6000-plus lumens of maximum output per unit, the numbers look right-on with these products.
However, being that you don’t need all 12,000 lumens of output all of the time, Jeremy opted to install Clearwater’s dimmer switch as well. Jeremy also slapped some “spot diffusion diodes” out back via the installation of Clearwater Darla lights (P/N: D71). At just 24 watts of consumption per light when set on high, and 2,400-plus lumens, these tiny 2.2-inch diameter LEDs are an outstanding lighting solution for when it’s time to throw that rig in reverse.

How to Install LED Lights On a UTV or Side-by-Side
For those of us who are fortunate enough to own UTV machines, all of the exposed bracketry, piping, and open bolt-holes along the factory roll cage make for fantastic light mounting options. Just be sure that your wiring harness is long enough to support this additional lighting upgrade, and if not, don’t worry. Clearwater Lights has you covered thanks to its impressive armada of LED lighting accessories, which include quick-connect wiring jumpers and extension cables to name but a few.
In the case of Jeremy’s Maverick X3 Turbo, he opted to install the larger Erica lights along the brush guard. As expected, this required the use of longer leads and harnessing. This led to the use of a whole bunch of heavy-duty zip ties. That is a good idea for any application that tends to see excessive amounts of jostling, dirt, and debris.
On a UTV like the Can-Am Maverick, removing the shrouding along the center console and shifter unit is pretty much mandatory for a flush look and to keep wiring well out of the way during spirited jaunts down the trail. As Jeremy illustrates in the installation video, portions of the lower dash cover panel must be removed in order to gain ample access to portions of the firewall and to achieve a flush look once finished.
Speaking of which, it turns out that the factory bulkhead along the firewall is an ideal access point for wiring purposes. Just beware of any nearby high-temp areas along the engine, as well as any moving parts like driveline, suspension components, and whatnot.
Clean Up And Finish Work
Starting with the lights plumbed upfront and wiring zip-tied to the chassis, work your back to the cabin for the control panel portion of the puzzle. No need for soldering or crimping here thanks to Clearwater Lighting’s quick-connect cable tabs. Just be sure to tuck any excess harness wiring well out of the way to avoid any contact issues.
From there, just plumb in the main harness to the Clearwater LED lighting units you’ve selected, and note that the smaller red wires are intended for toggle switches, rockers, and switch panels. These can even be connected to the vehicle’s ignition switch for a more integrated approach. As for the white wiring, feel free to affix that to the factory high beam switch for activation purposes if you wish.
Just make sure that the relay portion of the puzzle is tucked well away from heat and moisture. At the same time keep it accessible so it is not far out of the way and difficult to reach. Use the green connector to wire in the dimmer switch. Drill a hole for the adjustment knob, pop it into place, and move on to the next stage. Make sure that you run the supplied power and ground wiring to the battery. And finally, utilize the appropriate electrical terminal connector end that comes with the lighting kit as your point of contact.
From there, Jeremy wired up his rear-facing Darla lights from Clearwater. Just like the forward facing LED lighting install, take care to utilize the appropriate battery terminal clamp. After that, it was time to reinstall all of the plastic panels. Now his freshly illuminated rig is ready to rock!
