Is GM Really Bringing Back The Hummer?

It’s been a decade since General Motors put the Hummer brand out to pasture, and since then, quite a few rumors pertaining to the SUV brand’s return have come and gone. While the military-inspired, 4×4 focused SUV remains one of the most recognizable sport utility vehicles ever made, the resurrection of the inefficient Hummer has been highly unlikely… until now.

The Hummer HX Concept was revealed in 2008 but never came to fruition due to the brand being dissolved a couple of years later.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, insiders at GM have confirmed that the Hummer will return, but as a singular model with an all-electric powertrain and a GMC badge. As the report illustrates, Americans can expect to see a commercial during the Super Bowl next month, with the vehicle itself being slated to go on sale in early 2022.

If brought back as an electric vehicle, interior renderings from the scuttled HX Concept might offer a glimpse into what might someday be the next Hummer.

Unnamed sources at GM divulged that the resurrected Hummer will be produced in limited quantities for a niche portion of the off-road community. While fans of combustion engines tend to shrug off the notion of electric 4×4 vehicles, automakers continue to focus upon battery-powered off-road pickup trucks and SUV offerings, as buyer interest continues to gather steam. This invested interest in electrification has been backed by recent advancements in battery longevity and affordability, giving further cause for GM to release a multitude of electrified 4×4 machines within the next few years.

While GM has declined to comment on the report and subsequent speculation, GM will reportedly begin producing premium electric pickups and SUVs as early as late 2021 at its Detroit-Hamtramck plant. While rumors remain in abundance, this news lends further credibility to the leaked information regarding the Hummer’s return in early 2022, and that it will indeed be an electric vehicle.
