We all want more from our new trucks, and hope the manufacturers are paying attention when consumers ask for it. Were not just talking about more power, either, although we don’t know anybody that would turn that down. However, we also want more creature comforts, greater versatility, more value, and increased utility in the trucks we buy.
Well, it looks like General Motors was listening. We recently saw that both Chevrolet and GMC have confirmed that a new eight-speed automatic transmission will be standard on all 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks, as well as GMC Yukon Denali/Yukon XL Denali model SUVs equipped with the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 engine.
The GM-developed Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission is approximately the same size and weight as the Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic. Although not heavier, the new transmission’s 7.0:1 overall gear-ratio spread is wider than GM’s six-speed automatic transmissions, which should allow for a better selection of appropriate gears for different driving situations.
The new Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission also provides a numerically higher first-gear ratio to help drivers start from a standing stop more confidently with a heavy load or when trailering. The 8L90 also enables numerically lower rear axle ratios, which reduces engine rpm on the highway, and should deliver greater fuel savings in the long run.
With 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 is the most powerful engine offered in any light-duty pickup, and offers a maximum available trailer rating of 12,000 pounds, based on SAE J2807 Recommended Practices now being used by GM. As with other EcoTec3 engines, it seamlessly switches to four-cylinder operation under lighter loads, another way in which it helps to improve fuel economy.
