Once again, Ford Motor Company has delivered a new and very interesting off-road vehicle–much as is the case with the Troller T4 made in Brazil–to everyone in the world, apparently, except in the United States and Canada. However, before you get your undies all up in a bunch, let’s remember that we do have the all-new Ford F-150 here–something almost nobody else in the world will be getting.
The new Explorer-sized Ford Everest SUV is based on the global Ford Ranger platform, and the three-row Everest is to be built in Thailand and China. According to a report on Yahoo! Autos the new Ford Everest SUV will offer amenities much like those found in the vehicle manufacturer’s North American SUVs such as Sync dash entertainment, and selectable four-wheel-drive system to cover snow or off-road terrain.
However, its powerplant choices are decidedly not typical of what we would want here in the U.S. for an off-road-oriented SUV. They include a 2.2L four-cylinder or 3.2L five-cylinder turbodiesel, and the Ford Global 2.0L Ecoboost four-cylinder gas engine. And as much as the body-on-frame SUV here in the U.S. seems like a dinosaur (although a desirable dinosaur to hardcore off-roaders) that most of the vehicle manufacturers’ are shying away from in favor of uni-body chassis’, the new Everest is built on that sturdy ladder-frame architecture.
Is this a case of American SUV buyer’s not getting what they want from U.S.-based manufacturers? Or does Ford have something else up its sleeve in the way of a mid-sized SUV with a real truck backbone (ala Bronco) that we might be seeing soon.
