It’s a well-known fact that Toyota’s Tacoma midsize pickup and its SUV sibling, the 4Runner, are incredibly popular. In fact, the Tacoma has been the best-selling midsize pickup in America for at least the past 20 years. The fact that you can’t throw a stone—though we certainly wouldn’t condone stone throwing—on the trail without hitting either a Tacoma or 4Runner simply reinforces that popularity.
That doesn’t mean these are perfect vehicles—far from it, in fact. At the top of the list of flaws is Toyota’s woefully underpowered drivetrains. Sure, they are reliable, but you’re not likely to be winning many races. That said, ProCharger, an industry leader in centrifugal supercharger technology, has just announced that it has added even more model years to its growing list of 50-state emissions-legal supercharger systems for the Toyota Tacoma and 4Runner.
What Tacoma And 4Runner Models Are Covered?
Thankfully for Tacoma owners, ProCharger has fitments for models dating back to the start of the second generation. Tacoma pickups fit with the 4.0-liter V6 engine from 2005 until 2015 are covered by the new 50-state-legal CARB E.O. number, as are third-generation (2016 to 2024) Tacomas fit with the 3.5-liter V6 engine. For 4Runner it’s the popular fifth-generation, built from 2010 to 2024, with the 4.0-liter V6 that is covered as well.
Within these model years, all body styles (single cab, Double Cab, and crew cab), trims, and drivetrains are included.
More (Supercharged) Power For The Party
Okay, so you own a Tacoma or 4Runner and are happy that ProCharger offers a supercharger kit with 50-state emissions compliance. We know what the next question is: How much power will the kit make?
ProCharger claims that its Tacoma and 4Runner supercharger kits will add between 40 and 45 percent more power. That’s running on 93-octane fuel, and the system will produce 7-8 psi of boost. For the 4Runner’s 4.0-liter V6, that means a boost from 270 horsepower to about 390 horsepower. Tacomas with the 4.0-liter can expect a bump from 245 horsepower to about 355 horsepower. For 3.5-liter V6-powered Tacomas, adding boost equates to about 400 horsepower. Naturally, if you’re in a state with 91-octane fuel, those figures might be a touch lower.
Everything needed for installation is included with the kit. This includes a D-1SC supercharger head unit in either a satin black or polished finish, a three-core air-to-air intercooler, ProFlow blow-off valve, six-rib drive belt and pulleys, the necessary fuel system upgrades, and the necessary ECM tuning and handheld tuner.
Installation of the ProCharger supercharger system is quick, easy, and DIY friendly. The system is completely reversible with no permanent modifications needed. And the kits utilize the factory intake airbox which allows for use with a snorkel. There are even options for aftermarket bumper and winch-friendly intercoolers.
