SUVs equipped with off-road packages are now commonplace. Examples include the GMC Yukon AT4, Ford Expedition Tremor, and Nissan Armada PRO-4X. Now, there’s a new player in the game: the 2025 Lexus LX 700h Overtrail. This hybrid-powered SUV combines the model’s flagship luxury with “heightened off-road capability.” Let’s dig into exactly what that means.
The LX 700h Gets A Special Frame And Off-Road-Centric Bits
The Lexus LX, which was launched in 1995, now boasts the LX 600 and the first-ever LX 700h for the 2025 model year. Both models use the GA-F platform, introduced in 2022. However, the LX 700h features a three-cross frame to accommodate its extended length and heavier weight. There is also a new spare tire cross, which repositions the spare tire to facilitate the fitment of the hybrid main battery. This modification also optimizes the mounting angle and lowers the installation position, helping to maintain the vehicle’s departure angle.
The suspension system includes a double-wishbone setup up front and a multi-link rear suspension setup. Lexus states that the suspension achieves a high level of off-road performance combined with on-road prowess. The GA-F platform has been tuned to provide a linear response to steering inputs and preserve wheel articulation without compromising off-road performance.
Transmission Oil Pan Guard, 27.5-Inch Fording Capability, And More
The 2025 Lexus LX 700h is the first LX to offer a hybrid powertrain system. It uses a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The transmission features an oil pan guard to help reduce the risk of pan damage when off-roading on rocky trails. The hybrid system produces 457 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. A nickel-metal hydride battery powers the hybrid system, and it is encased in a waterproof structure divided into upper and lower sections. This design prevents water from entering during deep water crossings, ensuring the LX 700h’s fording capability of 27.5 inches. Lexus states that, in the unlikely event water enters the tray, a sensor will detect the intrusion and alert the driver via a display.
It’s also worth noting that the LX 700h is Lexus’ first hybrid system to include an alternator and starter as standard components. If the hybrid system fails, the starter will start the engine, and the alternator will power the 12-volt battery, allowing the LX 700h to be driven using just the engine.
Finally, the LX 700h can be driven with the transfer case in low range, using only the electric motor for propulsion. This is a first for Lexus and works in conjunction with the Multi-Terrain Select modes. Lexus states that this motor-only driving is ideal in scenarios requiring precise throttle control.
Locking Differentials, 33-Inch All-Terrain Tires, And More
The Overtrail package adds front and rear locking differentials to the LX 700h. These combine with the standard LX full-time four-wheel-drive system and electronic locking center differential. It’s worth noting that the LX 700h Overtrail is the only LX model that can be equipped with both front and rear locking differentials.
Other Overtrail equipment includes 33-inch-diameter all-terrain tires, 18-inch wheels, and a front skidplate. Additionally, the package features a waterproof 2,400-watt AC inverter, all-weather floor liners, and an appearance package that eliminates chrome.
Turn Assist, Active Height Control, And Crawl Control
The Lexus LX 700h can be configured with either two or three rows of seating. The LX is offered in several other grades: LX 600 Premium, LX 600 Luxury, LX 600 F Sport Handling, LX 700h Luxury, LX 700h Ultra Luxury, and LX 700h Sport Handling. All models include Active Height Control, Adaptive Variable Suspension, Multi-Terrain Select, and Multi-Terrain Monitor. Additionally, there are Downhill Assist Control, Drive Mode Select, and Crawl Control with Turn Assist. Crawl Control engages and disengages engine output and hydraulic braking pressure to help reduce tire slippage. Turn Assist decreases the LX’s turning circle by adding brake force to the inside rear wheel.
Six-Figure Pricing, Availability In Early 2025
It’s clear that Lexus put a lot of effort into ensuring that the 2025 LX 700h Overtrail is capable off the paved road and even into the rough stuff. It appears to be a compelling choice for those wanting a high-end luxury SUV with off-road DNA. The price of admission is high, though, with an MSRP of $115,350, including delivery, handling, and processing. Availability begins in early 2025.
