Proving that off-roading is still alive and kicking, the recent BF Goodrich Tires 52nd SCORE Baja 500 showed that racers and spectators aren’t waving the white flag at 2020. Instead, it’s a checkered flag, and this time, it belonged to Dan McMillin and Justin B. Smith in the #23 Trophy Truck.
Joining them in the winner’s circle was Tim Herbst in the #19 truck, along with Dan’s brother, Luke, taking third place in the #83 truck. The adjusted time showed Dan coming in at 8 hours 29 minutes, Tim coming in at 8 hours 34 minutes, and Luke coming in at 8 hours 45 minutes. Tim technically arrived first, but the time penalties assessed docked his finishing time and cost him the win.
The race took place in San Felipe in Baja California, Mexico. It was the first SCORE event since the Baja 1000 way back in November 2019, almost a year ago (time flies, doesn’t it?). Of the 129 contenders all vying for a shot at the prize, 77 made it all the way to the finish line. Dan and Justin’s dedication paid off. It’s fair to say that the “Big Blue M” team went the distance at this event.
The McMillin family’s ties to off-road racing were once again reinforced at this race as Dan took home the trophy. Along with his brother brother Luke, father Mark, uncle Scott, and cousins Andy and Jessica, the McMillins are indeed an off-road family to be reckoned with.
The next SCORE race will be the venerable BF Goodrich Tires 53rd SCORE Baja 1000. It will take place November 17-22, and once again see the titans of off-road racing come out to test their mettle. Who will you be rooting for? Let us know in the comments below.
