SEMA 2020: SPAL’s Cooling Fans Chill Extreme Off-Road Applications

In the off-road automotive and Powersports applications, intensity plays a key role in heating up the performance. SPAL is debuting new cooling fans designed to alleviate the heat. SPAL’s new options, in both brushed and brushless designs, give the off-road community more chilling choices than ever.

What Makes These Electric Fans Different?

“At SPAL we control each step in the manufacturing process, which means our fans provide superior cooling in most every application including Powersports and off-highway,” said Thom Balistreri, director of aftermarket sales, SPAL USA.

“Whether you’re competing in a grueling off-road race or powering an all-terrain utility vehicle through the mud and water, our fans offer guaranteed function, superior quality, and proven performance.”

SPAL Brushless Fans By The Numbers

When shopping for electric cooling fans a lot of terms and numbers are easily thrown around. For example, when a company says their fan motors are sealed to IP68 and IP6K9K standards, what they are referring to is the ability of the motor to be waterproof, dustproof, or waterjet capable.

IP686K9K standards – This is where the numbers really start to mean something – give more detailed information than just a vague term like “waterproof.” In the 6K level, the motor is tested with water projected in powerful jets against the enclosure from any direction, under elevated pressure. Specifically, at least 75 liters of water per minute at 150 psi at a distance of 3 meters.

To attain the 9K standard, the motor has to show protection against close-range high pressure, high-temperature spray downs. Between 14 to 16 liters of water per minute at a distance of 0.10 to 0.15 meters with the water temperature at 80 °C (176 °F). These tests are far more abusive than any off-road application, no matter how extreme.

Benefits

The brushless motors are not only tested to be dustproof and waterproof, but the electrical system is also built with SPAL’s “soft start” technology, which eliminates electrical spikes when the unit is turned on. Digitally controlled for smooth and reliable operation, these motors are low weight/high-efficiency units. Perfect for off-road racing.

Featuring 500W motors, the SPAL sealed, brushless “Plus” series fans deliver high-performance and reliability to fit most applications off-road today.  Current 500W SBL offerings include 14” (#30107102), drop-in mount, and 16” (#30107101) drop-in mount fan assemblies.
