SEMA 2019: Ford, Jay Leno Reveal Mystery 4×4 Build

Ford brings some incredible builds to its booth occupying an entire wall of the Central Hall. The automaker always shows off vehicles that are creative, unique, and just plain awesome. However, something rarely seen at Ford’s booth is a blanket. Hundreds of people were obsessed with it – including yours truly.

Taking on a boxy outline, the murmurs around the crowd made it clear – that had to be a Bronco. Ford wasn’t letting out any hints — other than the press conference’s start time. The announcement kicked off, and after a brief talk about Ford’s other vehicles — electric Mustangs and a new Super Duty trim package — things got down to brass tacks. Director of Enterprise Product Line Management of Ford Icons, Dave Pericak, began to speak.

Everyone was wondering what was under the sheet.

“It’s really great to be here today, as I look forward to this show each and every year,” Dave said. “Right now, I want to talk about the Bronco that debuts next year. We’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of Ford’s Bronco entry in the Baja 1000. In 1969, the late Rod Hall drove a stock Ford Bronco to the overall Baja 1000 win. To this day, it remains the only stock 4×4 to take the overall crown. Now, with the all-new Bronco R, we’re going back to Baja.”

Dave let a clip play, showing the badass Bronco R doing its thing in the desert. We’re excited to see more of this Bronco, which you can study up on in our recent article.

Ta-da! Leno and Pericak pulled back the veil to reveal Jay's secret build: a 1968 Bronco sleeper.

Wrapping up on the new Bronco, Pericak welcomed TV personality Jay Leno onto the stage to talk about the mysterious reveal — a 1968 Bronco given to him under hilarious circumstances.

“On my last day of The Tonight Show, Craig Ferguson [former host of The Late Late Show], as a smartass joke, dumped a junkyard Bronco in my parking space at NBC. He had no idea what he’d given me!”

Inspired by the new Bronco after seeing it in Detroit, Leno knew what he had to do.

“I love the classic look of the first-generation Bronco,” he said. “Much like the first-generation Mustang, sometimes there are things you just get right the first time.”

LGE-CTS played a vital role in building the Bronco, conducting the final assembly and finishing up the paint. The paint is a custom PPG color called "Tonight Blue."

The crowd was pumped up and ready to see what was under the blanket. Leno and Pericak pulled it back to reveal the build, done up in a beautiful blue and white color scheme. Keeping its classic look, but beefed up in the power department, the rig sported all the visual hallmarks of a vintage Bronco, but with a lot more muscle.

Some fast facts on the vehicle:

The vehicle wowed the crowd and made instant Bronco fans. Without a doubt, it’s one of the coolest builds here at SEMA. You can read up on all the details on the Ford Performance website. Be sure to stay tuned for more of the latest and greatest from here in Las Vegas.
