Springs are a crucial part of any suspension whether it be coil springs or leaf springs as they support the weight of the vehicle. We stopped by Hyperco at the 2016 SEMA Show to see how else springs work in the off-road market.
“Hyperco is going in and taking a look at what the actual requirements are for the spring,” said Kelly Falls of Hyperco. “When you put it on a vehicle, how much travel does it really need to have, what are the constraints for the inside diameter and the outside diameter, and can we build a better product.”

These are two different springs. Hyperco’s on the left made by cold winding with high tensile chrome silicon wire next to the original spring on the right made in a hot forming process. Hyper co was able to improve the spring while removing five pounds out of it.
“When we take a look at springs we are able to go in and reduce the weight, improve the linearity of the spring, and also orient the tips in a manner that it improves the resistance to bowing under load,” Falls explained. “There are more things we can do to the spring as well. We can make the body bulge bigger which further improves the linearity and travel.”
Everyone is running coilovers off-road from UTVs to prerunners and getting them set up correctly is something that Hyperco can do as well. Hyperco has taken what they have learned from road racing and the many championships including being utilized by every Indianapolis 500 winner since 1965.
