SEMA 2016: Controlling Temperature And Sound With Design Engineering

Design Engineering Inc.(DEI), is a long time manufacturer and supplier of thermal and acoustic tuning products, and they gladly showed us some of the newer additions to their product line. These are so new in fact, a few of these kits won’t be available until next January at the earliest.

The Exo Sleeve protection is the next step in header wrap for the off-road and dirt track market.

We caught up with Tom Miller, DEI’s vice president of sales and marketing at their booth on the tradeshow floor. “One of the products released this year is not new, but new for us. It is the split sleeve wire loom,” Miller said. “The split sleeve wire loom has been around for a long time, but when I started talking about it at the PWA conference with our customers, they were all onboard. They like it because there is not a big selection from other manufacturers. What is out there has a high price point,” he explained.

“We are coming out with a product that has a much lower price point that our customers are really going to appreciate. We will sell it by the hundred foot rolls and in retail packages of different lengths, depending on the I.D. size.”

Another product Miller showed us was the Exo Sleeve line of protection. “This is a product that we have had for about a year now,” Miller explained. “Basically, it is a fiberglass wrap encased in a stainless steel mesh for off-road and dirt track racing. These are motorsports where header wraps aren’t used, because the headers get muddy and when the crews powerwash the engine bay, the wrap starts to deteriorate. This mesh will protect the wrap.”

“The mesh helps provide an air gap between the wrap and the hot header, and it is easier to remove the wrap, which you will have to do at some point. Without this mesh, the wrap tends to bake to the headers.”

Benefits And Features Of The Exo Sleeve Protection

  • Allows direct contact to heat source
  • Highly abrasion resistant
  • Provides airflow around the sleeve
  • Silicone glass sleeve surrounded by 304 stainless mesh

The newest product in the lineup is the precut kits for first-generation Camaro sound deadening. These kits come in either sub-section or complete coverage kits. “We hope to have those available in January 2017,” Miller said. By early April 2017, we’ll have the C10 pickup truck kits available, and probably by summertime we’ll have the Tri-Five complete kits ready.”

These kits are so new that they are listed as “coming soon.”
