At The SEMA Show it is easy to overlook the simple fixes to common problems. Everywhere you look there are one off custom trucks, crazy displays, videos blasting, half-naked women and oh yeah… parts everywhere. We originally stopped at the Cognito Motorsports’ booth because of a very clean lifted GMC Denali HD.
That is where we meet up with Nick Vazquez, Marketing Director for Cognito Motorsports. We were discussing many of the common issues we see with lifted trucks or high horsepower GM trucks. That is when he pointed us to their pitman and idler arm support kit.
If you own a GM truck, then you probably have noticed the loose steering in the steering wheel. That loose steering is caused by excessive play in the pitman and idle arm. This is an extremely common problem and every late model GM truck dating back to the early ‘90s experiences at some point. Cognito Motorsports realized what is actually causing the problem and came up with an extremely simple and very effective way to fix the problem.
What they realized is that the steering linkage isn’t supported well enough to prevent forward and backwards movement. This movement causes a lot of pre-mature wear on the pitman arm and idle joints. Their solution is a simple support system to prevent the steering linkage from moving forward or backwards.
By stopping the movement, the pre-mature wear is basically eliminated. This means that the steering will feel more responsive and it will keep the tires pointed in the right direction. This results in an improvement of fuel economy, reduction in tire wear and reduced lane wandering.
The Pitman and Idler Support kit fits everything from 1993 to basically 2014, but it isn’t just for lifted trucks. Sure the larger wheel and tires accelerate the wear problem; all GM’s have this issue. So, whether your truck is for work, racing or street driving, this simple kit will fix a huge known problem.
