There is a special kind of ambition in taking parts that were never meant to go together and building something completely unique. That is the spirit behind the latest project from Grind Hard Plumbing Co.: an ultimate mini-rock crawler that combines an Amazon Mini Jeep body with components from four-wheelers and Samurai axles, held together with plenty of custom fabrication.
This build takes a small package and gives it serious capability. The goal was to get the drivetrain operational and hear the engine run. As often happens in complex builds, friends lent their skills to move the project forward.
Ryan visited the shop and tackled the driveline work, which immediately presented a challenge. One driveshaft was simply too long for the custom setup. Ryan took on the task to shorten and refit it, using careful measurements and welding techniques.
Getting the engine and steering working requires different expertise. Mike came by to sort through the wiring harness from the four-wheeler and adapt it for the new application. Derek worked on fabricating a custom exhaust that would fit the mini body while providing the right sound and clearance.
Meanwhile, the team installed the hydraulic power steering system. As they attempted the first start, they ran into troubleshooting – from dead batteries to persistent wiring glitches. Ethan noted that even for experienced builders, “It’s still the little things that stomp you.”
After overcoming wiring and fueling challenges, the engine finally roared to life. (With an initial high idle that needed addressing.) When the team checked, it was a binding throttle cable that caused the issue and required rerouting. With the engine running and steering functional (after fixing a leak and creating adapters), they took the mini-rock crawler for its first low-speed movements.
The successful test runs confirmed its potential, even navigating obstacles with open differentials. “It looks so cool in motion, so cool,” Ethan said after seeing it move. Seeing this mini-rock crawler project come to life after so much custom work and troubleshooting is proof that determination can lead to success.
Does this mini-rock crawler represent a direction for off-road adventures? The team behind Grind Hard Plumbing Co certainly proved that when creativity meets experience, you can build the most surprising projects anytime.
