Top 10 Vehicles From The Off Road Expo

OREtop10

Every year at the Off Road Expo in Pomona, California, there are plenty of vehicles to see, but which ones are the best of the best at the show? We walked around, looking high and low for what we thought were the Top 10 vehicles at this year’s expo.

We sought out for vehicles that are be popular, and some that were eye candy too hard to pass up. We saw every type of off-road machine at the show including side-by-sides, Trophy Trucks, Jeeps, prerunners, and race trucks. The list, we will provide is in no particular order, but represents what Off Road Xtreme felt was top notch at the show.

REWA002

It was hard not to walk up to this truck. At the King Shocks booth as it did not lack any detail. This luxury Chevrolet Silverado prerunner, was built by the Brenthel brothers, Jordan and Jonathan. It has everything you would need to pre-run the Baja 1000, and then some. The Silverado is fully caged, and uses Brenthel Industries Baja Kits front long travel kit.

The metal work on this truck is what caught our eye. The front fender wells are all aluminum with custom work continued out back, with added panels that made it appear as if the pickup came like this from the factory. Everything on the truck has a place and purpose. The Brenthel brothers work is some of the best in the industry, and walking around this prerunner you could see firsthand what such work could achieve.

REWA022

Like the guy or not, BJ Baldwin has hands-down one of the most recognizable Trophy Trucks in the industry. If you follow him on social media, you know that the guy loves what he does and has plenty of fun doing it. “Rampage,” the name he has given to his Chevy Trophy Truck, is a YouTube star. Baldwin’s “Recoil” videos on YouTube have amassed more than 20-million views to date.

BJ Baldwin's humor comes out on the back side of his truck.

The truck looks great sitting still, or hauling through the desert. Its King Shocks keep Baldwin riding smooth while he hits speeds of over 100 mph. Baldwin’s sense of humor crosses over to his race truck as well. Out back, he lets everyone know that Rampage only runs on “unleaded cobra venom”; if that does not make you chuckle inside, we do not know what will.

REWA023

Sitting just outside the main hall was Justin Oquendo’s Kibbetech race Ranger, looking like a model in the sunlight. The truck looked immaculate with its custom wrap. Up close, you could see what led this truck to win a championship in 2014. With help from Holley and their EFI line of products, this Ford Ranger is ready to go.

REWA027

Holley’s EFI smart coils, throttle body, injectors, oil pan, valve covers, and Hydramat are all included in this build. The race truck runs a Mullenix Racing Engines ready start pack that includes a 418ci, 630hp, LS3 motor, ARP main studs, Mullenix racing camshaft, LS7 roller lifters, LS3 rockers, and more.

REWA074

Every year, the Off Road Expo features a show ‘n’ shine that has on display every type of vehicle. Which is where we spotted Randy Ludwig’s 1967 Ford Bronco. The bright yellow, makes the Bronco easy to spot, and with the large pirate skull on the hood and skid plate, why would you not want to check out “The Bukineer,” as it’s called. We had a chance to talk to Randy and find out where he goes to have fun in the Bronco. “We race the NORRA 1000 every year. Last year, it did not end too well for us. We broke a wheel bearing that led to other things getting torn up and ended our rally,” said Randy.

The Bronco competes in a class that needs parts that would’ve been available pre-1970. “The NORRA 1000 is a great race. We really like that it is a rally race done in stages,” Randy mentioned. “We only race do race, but go on plenty more off-road trips throughout the year.” The Bronco build was done in stages at Lafortune Race Cars, and will be going back under the wrench to get additional work done.

REWA043

Making our way inside to the SCORE hall, several vehicles grabbed our attention. One of those was the Terrible Herbst shark Truggy. This iconic vehicle and has seen plenty of dirt and paint schemes in the sport, but still always has the shark front end. We did get to see the Truggy in the shop before we left with the Herbst’s on our Vegas to Reno chase experience, so it was cool to see it again.

REWA044

The Truggy was built by Mike Smith Fabrication. With has 32-inches of front wheel travel and 38 inches out back, the truck can hit a top speed of around 150 mph. It has seen time in both the SCORE and Best in the Desert (BITD) series in Class 1. The shark caught everyone’s attention after all, its not to often when you see a shark out of water!

REWA046

Right across the hall from the Truggy shark was Mickey Thompson’s restored Challenger IV. In a day and age where the average Trophy Truck costs more than $500,000, it is nice to see what the sport used to be and think about how far off-roading has progressed over the years. The Challenger IV was originally built in 1977 by Thompson, who decided to do something out of the norm for the time, by building a V8 buggy.

REWA048

The buggy has 41-inch shocks (which were unheard of for its time, and even into the early 1980s). It raced from 1978 to the mid-1980s and was replaced by the more advanced Challenger V, before making its way to Eugene, Oregon. It sat there for the past 17 years, waiting patiently for restoration to start. Everything on the buggy was revolutionary for its time, and you can see where today’s technology used ideas from this build.

REWA056

Walking back outside, we saw a crowd and instantly had to investigate. It was a 880hp, $550,000 Ford F-150 luxury prerunner. It has a hand-fabricated, TIG welded chassis, with a 130-inch wheelbase, uses four inch King Shocks up front for 26 inches of wheel travel, and 4.5-inch King Shocks in the rear offering 36 inches of wheel travel.

A prerunner with that much power and travel can clear some huge tires. This truck runs on 42-inch BF Goodrich Baja T/A’s. Lights from Rigid Industries allows the driver to see at night while the Racer Engineering Kicker sound system keeps the music flowing at all speeds. Also inside are three JetTrim seats, with MasterCraft Safety belts and nets.

REWA064

Things went from one extreme to another when we spotted a 1958 Jeep FC-170. This bright green classic Jeep pickup had a custom mahogany bed, and was catching plenty of attention at the Daystar booth. The Jeep has had a full body and frame restoration, and has been fitted with KC LED headlights and a Warn winch. The interior of the Jeep is something you would see at a Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance show, with all of its original components and upscale Lamborghini leather.

The FC-170 is powered by a 5.7-liter VVT Hemi with an automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes. Turning the large 35-inch Interco SSR tires are a G2 Core 44 front axle and G2 high pinion 60 rear axle. With such large tires, stopping was going to be difficult. The team installed Baer six-piston front brakes and Baer four-piston rear brakes. This truck is not all show however, as it does see frequent time out on the trail getting dirty.

REWA077

We next spotted the Rockstar Energy Mad Max Polaris RZR. “It’s a one-of-a-kind project that all boys dream about. We are proud to bring this project from an idea to life,” said Jason Merrell of UTV Wolfpack. The project is reminiscent of something you would see in a video game, and this time it is true. The so-called “Thirstcutter” was built based on the in-game vehicle from the Mad Max video game.

The Rockstar theme can be seen throughout the build, of this Polaris RZR.

Thirstcutter is a custom Polaris RZR, with everything handmade. The RZR has a custom wrap and powder coating to make it look like something Max would have used in the movie. Custom Rockstar wheel rings, roof spikes, and large Rockstar logo all give this all-terrain vehicle an identity and a purpose.

REWA083

Last but not least, we came across Nick Isenhouer’s 1998 black Ford Ranger. The truck runs Isenhouer-built twin I-beams, Autofab hubs and Wilwood brakes, crossover steering with a Howe pump, and Sway-A-Way shocks.

REWA088

Sitting on Raceline Avenger beadlocks with 37-inch BF Goodrich T/A tires. It runs McNeil Racing fiberglass with a custom paint job done by Paint by Paige. Out back, there’s a Camburg racing housing with Camburg hubs. Talking with a few onlookers, the truck is very competitive and did very well the last time it raced.

One of the best parts about seeing vehicles at an off-road event like this is knowing that they all look good sitting still, but look even better when they are doing what they are designed to do. All the trucks at the show see dirt in their lifetime, some more than others. We can all agree that knowing the vehicles are capable off-road rigs, and not just show trucks, is a huge plus.
