Heavy thunderstorms hit Argentina and have caused a massive landslide. Volcan, Argentina was affected severely and the road used to connect the main encampments between stage eight and nine is impassable by most vehicles. While the race cars may be able to traverse the muddy terrain, all the support vehicles are not able to. Because of this, the stage nine race from Salta to Chilecito was canceled.

The Dakar organization offered its sanitary facilities to help the local safety support in the area. Most everyone involved in the Dakar, racers and staff alike, were diverted on an alternate route through San Antonio de Los Cobres, extending the distance of the connection by around 200 kilometers (124 miles).
Sébastian Loeb was asked his thoughts on the day. “What happened today was unpredictable. A blocked road on the road to the bivouac makes things harder for the rally, that’s for sure…” Loeb explained. “We took a big detour. We got here well after nightfall. There was a long liaison. Tomorrow’s stage will be complicated. We’re in the lead, so we’ll start first and open the course. It looks like there’ll be lots of off-track racing. Stéphane is also very fast. We’re rivals, but the atmosphere is good. Taking the win for Peugeot is our fundamental objective. Once we’re in our cars, we both try to be faster than the other one, that’s for sure, but that’s racing for you.”
Stage ten is expected to go as planned from Chilecito to San Juan over a 751 kilometer (467 miles) course. As it stands now, Peugeot has the top three slots in the general standings with Loeb, Peterhansel, and Despres. Roma in his Toyota is in fourth and Hirvonen in a Mini has fifth.
Stay tuned for stage ten, we’re nearing the end!
