Mickey Thompson offers two incredible hybrid all-terrain tires, the Baja Legend EXP and the Baja Boss A/T, but the company builds them for very different users. In a recent breakdown, Ben Anderson, Mickey Thompson‘s Light Truck Product Manager, broke down what separates these two aggressive hybrid all-terrain tires to help buyers choose the right one for their truck.
What Are Hybrid A/T Tires?
Before diving into the specifics, Anderson defined what makes a tire a “hybrid” in the first place. He explained, “What Mickey Thompson’s A/T hybrid tires are a combination of a tread to void ratio a little more similar to a traditional all-terrain, but a tread element count a little more similar to a traditional mud-terrain.” This design gives you the big, stable tread blocks needed for good on-road manners, but with more open space for off-road grip and a much more aggressive look than a standard all-terrain.
The Baja Legend EXP
The Baja Legend EXP is the perfect choice for someone stepping up from a factory or standard replacement tire. Its symmetric tread pattern is designed for a quiet ride, and its lightweight construction means the on-road feel is very familiar. Anderson said of its ride quality, “It’s going to ride a little more familiar to a traditional OE replacement type product.” It still packs a punch off-road with Mickey Thompson’s standard Sidebiters and a durable T4 compound, all backed by a 50,000-mile warranty, making it a fantastic all-around upgrade.
The Baja Boss A/T
The Baja Boss A/T is the heavy hitter of the duo, built for maximum performance and durability. Its asymmetric tread is 3PMSF-rated for severe snow, and its massive Sidebiters are, as Anderson noted, “actually 150 percent deeper than the Sidebiters on the Baja Legend EXP.” The biggest advantage comes from its PowerPly XD construction, a competition-proven three-ply sidewall that offers superior puncture resistance and better handling. Anderson stated, “Power ply technology is engineered to help the tire react quicker to steering inputs and then stabilize quicker to make for better on-road handling.”
Choosing Your Hybrid A/T Tires
Ultimately, the choice comes down to your primary use. The Baja Legend EXP offers that aggressive hybrid look and a boost in off-road capability without sacrificing the comfortable, familiar ride of a daily driver. The Baja Boss A/T, with its heavy-duty construction, deeper tread, and race-proven technology, is the clear choice for the user who demands the absolute toughest and most capable tire for serious on- and off-road abuse.
