Can Your Jack Go Off-Road? These With Big Wheels And Skidplates Can

Eventually, you’ll need to jack up your 4×4 to fix a problem of one sort or another. Chances are, it’ll happen off-road—because that’s just how things shake out sometimes. One option for raising your rig is an off-road floor-style jack. These jacks resemble standard floor jacks but have features that allow them to function in—and survive—rugged terrain. In this piece, we’ll look at a trio of off-road floor-style jacks for every budget.

About Off-Road Jacks

The term “off-road jack” is often used to refer to a jack designed with features that allow it to function well off-pavement. There are a wide variety of off-road jacks, including farm-style and hydraulic bottle-style options from a range of manufacturers.

In this story, the three off-road floor-style jacks we’re highlighting share some commonalities—features similar to those found on your 4×4. Namely, each has rugged wheels, and all include underbody skidplating.

These off-road floor-style jacks are built for use on terrain like dirt and sand, but they also perform well on gravel surfaces such as parking lots and driveways—or even your cement garage floor. The larger tires can roll over obstacles that would stop a small-wheeled floor jack in its tracks. And in sand, dirt, or mud, the skidplating helps prevent sinking.

Read on for an overview of each jack and decide which one would make a great addition to your off-road tool kit—or even your garage.

The Jegs 3-Ton Heavy-Duty Hydraulic Off-Road Floor Jack features lightweight aluminum sides paired with a steel center, and its handle is also aluminum. The front wheels measure 5.75 inches in diameter, while the rear wheels are 7.75 inches. It has handles on both sides for convenient carrying, and the unit is designed for easy storage. It includes two extra interlocking sections, providing a lift range of 6.1 to 28 inches. The total weight of the jack is 72 pounds. At the time this story was published, the jack had a regular price of $351.99 but was on sale for $319.99.

Badland 3-Ton Off-Road Jack

Harbor Freight ToolsBadland 3-Ton Off-Road Jack is made from steel and aluminum and features a lift height of over 29 inches. It also includes a dual-piston “Rapid Pump” system, heavy-duty solid composite wheels, and sealed wheel bearings that roll smooth and provide long life in off-road conditions. Additional features include durable stainless steel hardware, 7/16-inch aluminum side plates, and solid steel axles. This 72.2-pound jack also has an integrated top handle for carrying and a locking adjustable-height extension with grip pad. At the time this story was written, the jack was priced at $399.99. It’s worth noting that Harbor Freight also offers a Badland 1.5-Ton Off-Road Jack.

Pro Eagle “Kratos” 3-Ton Big Wheel Off-Road Jack

Pro Eagle’s flagship 3-ton Kratos off-road jack is one of five floor-style off-road jacks offered by the company. It was designed from the ground up to “perform flawlessly wherever needed.” A significant amount of development went into the jack, as illustrated by the fact that the pump is the result of 10 years of research and development.

The jack’s long list of features includes a maximum lift height of 28 inches with the included 8-inch extension. That increases to 35 inches with an optional 15-inch extension. Kratos weighs 68 pounds and is made of aluminum. Another cool feature is the jack’s standard mini BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 composite wheels. This feature was sparked by BFG’s use of Pro Eagle jacks in its Pit Support program. It’s worth noting that Kratos owners can upgrade to the new wheels by ordering a set from the company’s website.

At the time this story was published, the price for the Kratos was $599.99.
