“Big Oly” is legendary among off-road race vehicles. The 1969 Ford Bronco race truck was built by Dick Russell and driven by Parnelli Jones and renowned race-car builder and driver Bill Stroppe in both Baja 1000 wins. The 1969 Ford Bronco continued to win races, including the Baja 500 and the Mint 400 in 1973. It’s considered the single most significant Bronco-inspired vehicle ever built, and was likely responsible for the Ford Bronco’s eventual commercial sales success.
Mecum’s Original Spring Classic auction will held May 14 – 22, 2021 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. The auction will also feature a number of other impressive vehicles from Parnelli’s personal collection. Two Saleen Mustangs (Numbers 001 and 003) of the Parnelli Jones’ 1970 SCCA Trans Am Championship tribute editions and a 1994 Ford Mustang Indianapolis 500 Pace Car will be on the block. The 1974 Parnelli VPJ-4 Chassis 4/002 Formula One race car driven by Mario Andretti and an exacting replica of the 1963 Indianapolis 500-winning race car known as “Ol Calhoun” will see the gavel drop, too. A selection of memorabilia items from Parnelli’s personal collection are also being sold at the Mecum auction.
