Seats matter, especially when you realize that you are only as comfortable as the cushion under your ass, or as safe as the bolstered construction that literally “has your back.” In order to show what the seat safety masterminds over at Recaro have been up to as of late, we visited their booth at SEMA this year, where we encountered product specialist Adrienne Hautamaki.
While there, Hautamaki went over two products, starting with Recaro’s recently unveiled line of Pro Racer SPG XL ORV seats, which she explains have been engineered to meet the extremes required in order to be Ultra4 race truck compatible. This meant adding increased spinal protection via a fiberglass shell and focusing on energy absorption within the cushion itself. That said, the Pro Racer SPG XL ORV seat has been crash tested and is now certified to withstand five years of race abuse in FIA-sanctioned events. It also comes with a specially designed, easy-to-clean vinyl seating surface, for when the going gets messy.
Taking this same approach to off-road safety, but focusing upon producing a fully street legal product, the Recaro team crafted a seat called the Cross Sportster ORV. Complete with German-engineered nylon, and a vibration dampening foam that Hautamaki explains helps dissipate vibration harshness so that things like the “washboard effect” are not felt so strongly.
Targeting the weekend warrior, meant that Recaro had to appeal to both the off-road lifestyle loving 4×4 fan, and still retain road trip worthy levels of comfort and ease of use. Boosting its appeal, is the Cross Sportster ORV’s use of sturdy vinyl surface materials, the ability to be fully reclined, and the way in which it can be attached to Recaro’s trusty track slider kit.
“It’s a lifestyle kind of seat,” Hautamaki explains, “Something that you can use every day in your regular vehicle, and be comfortable and safe, and then also go on the trails.”
While Recaro remains tight-lipped as to what MSRP for these two new 4×4 seats will look like, Hautamaki informs us that prices will be announced at King of the Hammers and that full production for both products begins in April. So if this looks like your sort of seating, be sure to start saving up for what may become two of the most comfortable off-road safety solutions in the history of the modern automobile.
