SEMA 2019: GU Auto Tech Makes Nighttime Off-Roading Easier

There’s something awesome brewing for the off-road market, and its name is GU Auto Tech. GU Auto Tech is here at the 2019 SEMA Show, and it’s showcasing the new Pro Off-Road Custom IR Display and Snake Eye Thermal Far IR night vision camera.

As the name denotes, the system gives users the ability to see at night by using infrared light. Although night vision was initially designed for military use, civilian use has grown over the years. What’s more, off-roaders know all too well the need for good visibility at night.

The Snake Eye infrared camera and Pro Off-Road display make for a powerful combo. Using them could be the key to getting the most out of nighttime driving.

We spoke with GU Auto Tech’s Jacque Joubert to find out more about the camera and display. “This is something we tailor-made for the off-road market,” he said. He gestured to a nearby UTV equipped with the system and said, “This system specializes in nighttime visibility. Viewers can see things up to 400 meters away [437 yards], whether they’re trees, rocks, animals, people, or other things to avoid.”

The Snake Eye’s field of vision is about 100 to 120 degrees, giving a broad perspective of the area being viewed. It can be installed about anywhere thanks to its adaptable mount. On the UTV, it used a magnetic mount, while on a nearby Shelby Raptor, it was integrated into the front bumper.

The camera picked up interesting images, even as the sun was setting.

The eight-inch Pro Off-Road Custom IR screen, meanwhile, can be mounted inside the cabin or free-held in one’s hands. It uses dials to increase brightness and sensitivity, and displays at a medium resolution.

Both the camera and display are sure to come in handy for folks who enjoy night hunting and driving. To find out more, be sure to check out the GU Auto Tech website.
