With the continued runaway success of the Ford Raptor, other manufacturers are left to scramble for their own performance trucks so they aren’t left in the cold. After quite a few years, Chevrolet and Ram finally entered the market with the Chevrolet Reaper and Ram Rebel. Both of which are lackluster, to say the least, compared to the Raptor. Ram decided they needed to up their game and test out the market with a new concept. Unveiled at the Texas State Fair, the Ram Rebel TRX concept could be a true Raptor fighter.
Packed with lots of go-fast and functional goodies, the Rebel TRX concept is making a serious statement. It seems the entire goal was to best the Raptor in every way possible. Under the hood rests a 6.2-liter Supercharged Hemi V8. Ram claims the truck is the most powerful factory-engineered half-ton pickup ever with 575 horsepower. That certainly beats out the 2017 Raptor’s 450 horsepower being pumped out of the twin-turbo Ecoboost V6.
The massive engine is backed by a TorqueFlite 8HP70 eight-speed automatic transmission with new calibrations to optimize the expected high-speed off-road driving. The truck uses Ram’s 4×4 Performance Control System with a Borg Warner 44-45 transfer case, all controlled via a knob on the dash with predetermined settings for normal, wet and snow conditions, off-road and Baja.
Ram stepped up the beef in the drivetrain as well. A standard Ram 1500 4×4 front axle is used with heavy duty and high-angle half shafts that can handle the 13-inches of front wheel travel. Ram’s engineering department moved the front spindles forward to help accommodate for the massive 37-inch tires.
Under the backend, Ram placed in a Dynatrac Pro 60 axle assembly with an electrically selectable locker and 35-spline axle shafts. The locker was designed to be able to be used in any of the 4×4 modes, not just in 4-Lo as is often seen from factory vehicles.
Through the use of adjustable performance coilovers with internal bypass up front and 2.5-inch bypass shocks in the rear, the Rebel TRX gets a full 13-inches of wheel travel both on both ends. The front travel matches the 2017 Raptor which stepped up the game from the 11.2-inches of the previous model Raptor. Out back, the Rebel TRX loses out to the Raptor by 1-inch.
Behind the custom, Mopar beadlocks hides a Baer brake system that anyone would envy. A hydraulic-boost compensation unit loads up a pair of 6-piston monoblock brake calipers in the front that clamp onto 15-inch diameter brake rotors. Out back is another set of 6-piston calipers that grab ahold of 14-inch diameter rotors.
“Ram Truck heads to the 2016 State Fair of Texas with a host of product news plus a new concept that pickup fans will truly appreciate – the Ram Rebel TRX concept was built specifically for this event and solidifies Ram Truck’s position as the off-road pickup leader,” said Mike Manley of Ram Trucks. “With 575 supercharged horsepower and a suspension system built to withstand an all-day hammering, the Rebel TRX concept can devour the roughest terrain at more than 100 miles per hour and never look back.”
Ram certainly isn’t messing around. The wide flares help to cover for the extra 6-inches added to the track width, the interior has custom seats and an 8.4-inch infotainment system, and the many exterior add-ons boost the usefulness and look.
The biggest question remains, however. Will Ram actually produce the Rebel TRX? Time will tell. For more info on the Ram Rebel TRX, check out the Ram Truck website.
