The Ford Mustang SSP (Special Service Package) was introduced in the 1980s to give police departments across America access to high-speed pursuit vehicles at a time when the typical Crown Victoria took double digits just to reach 60 MPH. Today, the Taurus-based Police Interceptor offers more power and acceleration than even the Mustang SSP, but today’s criminals don’t always stick to paved roads.
That’s where the Ford F-150 Special Service Vehicle (SSV) comes into play. With six different configurations meant to meet the needs of a 21st century police force, the F-150 SSV can haul more equipment and go more places than your typical patrol car.
Ford didn’t have to do too much work to its famous F-150 to get it ready for police work, though the few modifications do make a big difference out in the field or on the street. A high-output 240-amp alternator enables for longer idling times and enables the addition of energy-intensive gear such as light bars and computers. On the inside, the center section of the front seat has been deleted leaving room for two up front, and the floor and rear bench seat are both made from easy-to-clean vinyl.
The Ford F-150 SSV comes in XL trim in either Supercab or Supercrew configurations and is available in two-wheel or four-wheel drive. Police departments have their choice of the tried-and-true 5.0 liter V8 or the less-thirsty but more-torquey 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6.
With the addition of the F-150, Ford now offers six police vehicles, including the Interceptor Sedan, Explorer-based Interceptor Utility, Transit Prisoner Transport and the Expedition SSV.
