The poor Jeep Comanche, gone before we knew it. Jeep’s short production run of its XJ-based pickup has made the vehicle something of a unicorn in the off-road world, and when we see one that’s not only been restored but brought back to its four-wheeling roots, we have to check it out and see what went into it.
We found this specimen after a quick search on the dedicated off-road section of Reddit, /r/4×4. The owner, whose online handle (l1v32r1d3BmX) sounds like U.S. Navy-level encryption code, was proud to show off the work he had done to the rest of the community.
“The whole truck was built in the garage,” said the owner, linking to a picture of his garage with the Comanche in the driveway. Another picture showed the Comanche from the side, where some of more astute Reddit observers could deduce a few more details.
“Those are factory GM 1-ton alloys,” said one user. “I thought so, most likely has 14B,” said another. The owner stepped in and confirmed this guess, saying “Yeah, I swapped in a 14B in the rear and a Bronco solid axle up front. I was quite surprised when I drove out of the garage and it drove straight and didn’t lean when turning, haha.”
The owner did confess that the rather small tires he had installed were not doing his differentials any favors, but he plans to get bigger tires soon, probably 37 inches or more. He also plans to do a diesel swap in the near future, and thinks he will go with a Mercedes-Benz OM606 diesel, which came in a turbocharged design from 1997 to 2000 and made 174 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque.
“I still need to figure out a few things,” said the owner. “Paint, engine, and some suspension stuff.” We hope he figures it out soon, because we can’t wait to see what this Comanche will do next.
