Jessi Combs is a lady with many talents, but all have one thing in common – a motor. She is in the process of filming 1001 car things to do before you die, as part of the show The List. Last week she was out at King of the Hammers (KOH) to drive John Currie’s 4500 Rubicon Express Modified Class Jeep.
This is not Combs’ first time racing KOH, as she competed and won in 2014 in the same class. She had a lot to live up to with Currie’s vehicle already having a bullseye on it from winning the last three years.
Combs’ ran great all day crossing the finish line second overall. With adjusted times Combs finished third overall and first in the 4500 Class. “The car ran great all day, we did blow a couple tires which set us back, but other than that it was a good day. If we did not have that down time who knows how close we would have been to the Lovells,” Combs explained after crossing the finish line.
Taking the overall and Class 4800 win was Brad Lovell. “We finally caught up with Jessi on Jack North,” said Lovell. “We kept trailing her but still we couldn’t grab her.” Lovell was finally able to pass her on the bottom of Jackhammer on the sand hill.

Lovell did not see her again until they had stopped to winch at Highway 19 and 20. “She got up it without winching” said Lovell, “and that put her right back in the game again.” The two continued to battle into the desert, but Combs did end up loosing her high gears. Lovell explain, “We lost sight of her then, but boy did she give us a good race.”
Combs has been nicknamed the first woman of Ultra4, as she was the first woman to win a KOH class back in 2014 when she won the Spec Class. She is already thinking about the 2017 King of the Hammers and making sure she keeps her crown.
