Boiling shock fluid is a common cause of shock failure when off-road racing. As the vehicle is driving through tough terrain the shocks are used more and more increasing the temperature of the fluid.
Fox shocks has come up with an addition to their line of bypass shocks that enables the shock fluid to get dropped even more, and in some cases up to 150 degrees. Its new external cooling system 2 (ECS2) technology enables that temperature to drop significantly.
The ECS2 uses internal and external fins for an increased cooling surface area and forced, undirectional circulation for maximum cooling efficiency. “Most of the Trophy Truck drivers running in Baja are overheating their shocks and needed something extra. The ECS2 is able to keep fluid temperatures low even with extreme outside temperatures,” Bryan Harrold explained about the bypass.
Harrold continued, “The ECS2 is available in 11-inch, 14-inch, and 17-inch lengths with eight or 10 fittings. The technology is not only for shocks, but could be used as a transmission cooler or power steering cooler.”
The ECS2 was on display on Fox’s 4.4-inch external piggyback bypass shock. This shock has a very large 1.25-inch hard chrome-plated stainless steel 17-4 H900 shock shaft. These shocks also have a rotating body cap that allows for quick and easy rotation of the shock body with simple hand tools.
This is a great addition and will help off-roaders perform well in the desert. We will just need to stay tuned to get real world results from this setup.
