Singapore Turns Chevy Colorado Into Fire-Fighting “Red Rhino”

General Motors discontinued the Chevy Colorado in America after the 2012 model year, focusing instead on developing a global model that it has (unironically) reintroduced to the States. Over in Singapore though the new Colorado (technically the Isuzu D-Max) is already well-integrated into many private and government fleets, feeding a growing niche for aftermarket conversions of the popular pickup.

red-rhino-3Engineering firm Hope Technik built a fire-fighting version of the Chevy Colorado that it calls the Red Rhino at the behest of the Singapore Civil Defense Force, adding a maneuverable soldier in the war against flames.

Tasked with building a fire-dousing truck that can navigate the urban jungle of the Singapore city-state, Hope Technik completely removed the doors on a Crew Cab model to make entering and exiting the Red Rhino snappy. The entire bed of the plucky pickup has been filled with a large foam retardant container and pump system, with additional foam tanks stored in the front fenders to provide better weight distribution.

Two foam-spewing backpacks are stored in a rear compartment for quick and easy access, and a full compliment of crew members includes four firefighters and a paramedic. The Red Rhino has been designed to go where larger fire engines cannot, which is especially important in Singapore, which has the third-highest population density in the world (nearly 8,000 people per square mile). And yes, it is rocking the 2.5 liter Duramax diesel motor.

The American aftermarket has taken awhile to warm up to the Chevy Colorado, but at SEMA in Las Vegas this year we saw the first inklings of potential in the midsize pickup. While the focus may have been more on off-road than civil service, we’re sure in time that our own aftermarket will show Singapore just how creative and versatile we can make our trucks.
