Waking up on race day in Baja had a different feel then the days before. Waking up and realizing that the motorcycles and ATVs had already taken off the line, brought the race feeling to reality.
Off Road Xtreme headed to the starting line to watch the first couple classes leave the line before we hopped in the chase truck of the number 1075 Chinolas Motorsports Class 10 buggy. The anticipation of the starting of the 48th annual SCORE Baja 1000 could be felt standing waiting for the number 4 Justin Matney truck to leave the line.
The chatter in the crowd instantly stopped as soon as the LED lights lit up, followed by the roar of the motor. It was time to start racing. The Trophy Trucks would each have one minute spacing between them while the rest of the field would only have 30 seconds.
The trucks were off, each taking a different path and speed into the first turn. Some came in hot, while others seemed to limp it around the corner. One after another they all went through. The likes of Rob MacCacharen, Robby Gordon, Larry Roeseler, BJ Baldwin, and crowd favorite Apdaly Lopez.
One by one they continued, once all the Trophy Trucks went it was Class 1’s turn, and so down the list. We were able to see two Class 4400 trucks leave the line. These trucks are vehicles that compete in Ultra 4 series, and race in the King of the Hammers.
One of these trucks was being driven by Shannon and Wayland Campbell. They are putting their vehicle to the test to see if it can compete in one of the most grueling off-road races in the world.
After we watched the trucks off the line and then number 1075 Chinolas Motorsports Class 10 it was time to head south to the first pit. Stay tuned for more updates from race day on the number 1075 buggy.
