Every year, in support of breast cancer awareness, MORE (Mojave Off-road Racing Enthusiasts) Racing hosts a Powder Puff Race for the Cure event. It is one of many ways that the group lives up to its standard of keeping the off-roading community fun, safe, and tight-knit.
MORE Racing is a Southern California racing series focused around the community and fellowship between racers and their families. Their main event is their six race point series spread throughout the year, but their Powder Puff Race is a widely-popular gathering as well.
It is a women-only, one-day charity event designed to raise money and support for the fight against breast cancer. As such, the event is typically held in October for breast cancer awareness month. This year’s race, to be the 10th annual, was originally supposed to be held on October 17th in Barstow, California. However, complications with the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) have forced both postponement and a change of venue.
On October 13th MORE announced, on both their Facebook page and their website, that the race would be postponed until November 21st. They explained that this was due to an issue of staffing with the BLM.
This was not, however, the first complication with the BLM that MORE had experienced. It was on October 10th that the BLM first came to MORE with a staff shortcoming, and attempted to deny the permit for the race until November. After some negotiation, both parties settled on the compromise of shortening the race to 18 miles. The second and most recent instance, unfortunately, could not be worked around, and the BLM postponed the event.
Both MORE and enthusiasts have expressed their disappointment as the denial for permit happened only four days before the race. It came as a shock to everyone both MORE staff and fans of the race. They began immediately searching for alternate location to hosts the race, with places like Rasor Road and California City being suggested. At this point, there is no further news on the situation, but the MORE staff is still hopeful that this race will be the best Powder Puff yet.
