Fiat-Chrysler has a hit on their hands with the new Jeep Cherokee, which has smashed into the compact crossover market to become FCA’s second-best selling product, after its pickups. With a combination of daring looks and multiple option packages that make it equally attractive to off road enthusiasts and mall crawlers alike, the Cherokee is also finding success overseas in places like the UK.
In a bid to make its compact crossover even more appealing to European sensibilities, the Jeep Cherokee will begin offering a beefed-up 2.2-liter MultiJet diesel available with up to 197 horsepower. It will augment an engine lineup that already offers a 138 hp 2.0-liter diesel with a manual transmission, and buyers will be able to opt for a version of the 2.2-liter motor making 182 horsepower. Both versions of the 2.2-liter unit come with 324 lb-ft of torque, however, and can only be had with the new nine-speed automatic transmission.
That’s not the only upgrade for the European version of the Cherokee though, as it is also beefing up its safety and standard features. New for 2016 is a standard electric tailgate, windshield wipers with rain sensors, a dusk sensor for the headlights, eight-way adjustable driver’s seat, and an “anti-dazzle” rear view mirror with a built-in microphone for wireless calling. 0 to 100 km/h / 0 to 62 mph is about 8.8 seconds with the most-powerful motor, with fuel economy a combined 49.5 on the UK testing standard, which translates to the mid-to-high 30s here in the U.S.
Fiat-Chrysler has shown an increasing willingness to offer European-style diesel motors here in America, with the Jeep Wrangler tipped to be one of the next recipients. Could a diesel Cherokee be in the works for the U.S. too?
