In the late 80s and early 90s, Jeep was into racing. They hit multiple markets with XJ Cherokees and MJ Comanches, getting their vehicles in the spot light. Some of the most popular were the Craftsman sponsored rigs out in the dirt, including a 1990 Comanche that was raced in Class 7S by Rob MacCachren. This exact same truck also was also featured in the video game Baja: Edge of Control.
This truck was a factory-built race truck specifically designed for skipping across the desert floor. The short wheel base Comanche was built tough and ran a factory 2.5L block…but that is about where the factory components stop.
Fast forward to today. The exact same truck is up for sale on Craigslist, and it isn’t all clapped out like you would think.
Rob Mac’s old truck has been well cared for. Refreshed and redone, still wearing race numbers but with new paint, this truck appears to be ready to tackle the desert at any time. The listing states the Jeep 2.5L four-cylinder was rebuilt and is pushing out more than 300 horsepower through a Mogi Turbo 350 transmission. A Dana 60 rear differential handles rear power transfer and Fox Triple Bypass shocks on all four corners handle compression and rebound.
It is easy to see in the pictures that the folks who maintained and rebuilt the old Craftsman truck really took it to heart and handled with care. Right now, the truck is listed for $18,000. Seems like it might be a lot for a little old Comanche but this isn’t any ordinary Comanche. If you are in the Barstow, California area and might be looking for a race truck, this is the one you need.
